Way 13: Ensemble Characters in Dramas
Hello again! You’ve started the process of getting into the minds of your characters. Let’s now take a moment to offer some options to introduce those characters well in the opening of your soon-to-be screenplay.
TOPIC: How to Introduce Ensemble Characters in Dramas
LESSON: Dramas are unique because they require full focus on story and characters for the opening pages, as opposed to genres like action, thriller, comedy, science fiction, and horror, which can utilize action, thrills, laughs, tech, and scares to get the story and characters moving forward in those opening moments. Dramas don’t have that buffer.
ASSIGNMENT: Take a look at your drama concept and all of the development materials you’ve created, and begin to envision how you are going to open up this screenplay and introduce your characters in an engaging way. Take some time to write down some bullet points, each of which showcase a scene description or visual, much like I did for you breaking down the trailer for THE POWER OF THE DOG. Once you’re done, continue to keep those visuals in mind and play them over and over in your head as you edit and add to them through your mind’s eye. I’ll see you for the next Way!
