Willow Oak Ranch owner, Richard Arnold, from the great state of Tennessee, joins Freddie, Trade and Bob on this week's edition of the Harness Racing Alumni Show. Richard is a prominent attorney and an owner/breeder of standardbred racehorses. Arnold shares with us the story of how he first got involved in harness racing. He also discusses the reasoning behind his letter to HRU voicing his criticism of the Williams & Faraldo opimioms that are in opposition to the well-being of harness racing. Richard also addresses HISA and feels that it might be the only hope for our sports survival. All on this week's broadcast.
Quote from Richard Arnold:
"In consideration of Mr. Gural’s role in helping to focus the industry on the cheating he should be nominated for USTA Person of The Year or even Decade rather than the object of a public letter from the USTA asking that he, rather than the cheaters, be investigated."

Mr. Irwin is correct, Mr. Arnold does raise cattle and I suppose that makes him a stockman. If you listen to all of the interview, he's also an attorney who's tried two cases at the Supreme Court.

I've never had the privilege of meeting Barry Irwin, but I have long been an admirer from afar. I do object somewhat to his assertion that Richard Arnold has mischaracterized Thoroughbred racing as being the the first of the horse sports to reach the public's attention with PEDs. Although he might be correct in asserting that the Standardbred bandits may as he says have "been in the vanguard", the key word is the use of the term "public". In reality, in most instances the public could not care less about the Stsndardbreds. Horse racing's greatest identification comes through the Thoroughbreds. The vast majority of the bad press that horse racing gets comes from the TBs. That doesn't necessarily mean that there are not a greater number of villians among the STB folk. It means that the vast majority of the public identify horse racing with the TBs. If a horse came up positive in the Hambletonian most of the media would ignore it. When a horse comes up positive in the Kentucky Derby it makes the Evening news and the New York Times. In summary, I do not believe that Mr Arnold said or even implied that the TB folk are greater crooks than their STB brethren, only that they are who the public identifies with.

With all due respect to Mr. Arnold, who comes across as a very reasonable professional stockman, Inmust take exception to his characterization of Thoroughbred racing as bein the first of the horse sports to reach the public's attention for having issues with PEDs. I am going to cut him some slack as he is relatively new to the enterprise, but I will point out that historically it has always been the Standardbred miscreantsthat have been in the vanguard of illegal drug use and cheating in American horse sports.
