Brian Tutty spent 38 years as a biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the vast majority of which was spent on Canada’s west coast. Brian still consults on public fisheries related matters some 13 years since. I asked Brian if he could give Blue Fish Radio listeners a review of decisions taken or not over the past 50 years that led to where we are today. What I learned was startling, but should not have come as a surprise. Link below to hear Brian Tutty’s reflections on how values about wild fish changed over the years, and why we need to turn to local and indigenous round tables at the local level if wild salmon are to recover on The Blue Fish Radio Show:

Brian is a refreshing encyclopedia of wisdom that respresents many in our fishing community whose voices are largely ignored by DFO who controls too much of the agenda to build back our fishing stocks and has been ineffective in so many ways. I have worked with Brian recently and others like Bob Cole who was on your program before as well. Brian and Bob have a wealth of knowledge and experience like many others that could be harnessed in a far more effective way to manage our fisheries. Having a federal government deptarment controlled by politicians and life-time bureaucrats out of touch with the front line of the industry is not the model for objectively managing one of our resources on a sustainable basis. The scientific and private sector communities need to be much more involved to drive innovation and the provincial government should also ensure that the federal political objectives do not harm the industry that means so much to so many local communities and livelihoods, including those in the sports fishing, tourism and related indutries that benefit from a growing and vibrant fisheries.
