Iain MacDonald wrote a song on an album that went gold in the 80s, Johnny Hates Jazz. It was a beautiful ballad (always my favorites). He has only gotten better over the years. He has written for various labels and even started his own. He can work his way around a recording studio with his eyes closed. He writes song that are upbeat and dancy and about things he cares about. Such as the enviroment. But he does it in a very "non preachy' way.
