In this episode we continue studying the book of Genesis. In this episode Jacob is on the run again. This is his 3rd time being on the run. He ran from Esau. He ran from his father in Laban and now, thanks to his sons, who slew the Shechemites, he’s running from the Canaanites and the Perizittes.

So God told him to go back to Bethel and build an altar. But before heading to Bethel, he told his household to get rid of their strange God’s and change their clothes.

His, sons had grabbed idols, jewelry and fine clothes when they raided the Shechemites. These rural shepherds had spent their lives out in the field, taking care of cattle, now they were wearing gold chains, gold earrings and silk garments and he told them to take it all off.

They were covered with the worlds glory from head to toe but that’s not the kind of glory they needed to make it to Bethel (the house of God).

On his way to God’s house, Rachel died while giving birth Benjamin, Deborah his mother's nurse died. And somehow Rueben his oldest son, ended up sleeping with Rachel’s handmaid.

We note that most of the trouble in Jacob’s life came from his family. Proverbs chapter 17 verse 17 says, "A friend loveth at all times and a brother is born for adversity."

This verse reveals that a brother or sister may be the source or cause of trouble in a family. But at the same time it reveals that a brother or sister is born to help us when strife or trouble hits a family. Family members may argue and fight but they come together and defend each other when adversity comes, especially if an outsider harms or comes against one of them.

The enemy seeks to cause trouble in family relationships, Cain killed his brother, Ham exposed his fathers nakedness. Reuben slept with his father’s concubine. Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar, only to be killed by his brother Absalom.

Yet, all is not lost, Because Jesus said in Luke Chapter 19 verse 10.

"For the Son of Man is come to seek and to Save that which was lost."
