In this episode we continue studying the Book of Genesis. In this episode the Living Word of God appeared to Abram in a vision, after he had defeated the four kings.

He told him that he was his shield and his exceeding great reward.
Shield means a protector, an armed defence, a hedge.

Reward means compensation, benefit, price, wages, worth

Was Abram having doubts, about the whole event? Did he fear that allies of the 4 kings would retaliate against him? So Jesus came to tell him don’t worry about that I’m your protector?

Was he thinking, I should have kept some of the gold and silver? And Jesus came to tell him, you did the right thing. You don’t need any of those things, I’ll take care of you. I am your reward.

This sounds similar to what God told the Levites.

Deuteronomy 18:1  The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.

Deuteronomy 18:2  Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.

Jesus being Abram's shield and exceeding great reward would not be just for this lifetime or in this world but he would be with him throughout all eternity

As we discover in this chapter that a deep sleep fell upon Abram and horror and great darkness fell upon him.

This text reveals that Abram experienced the deep sleep of death. With Jesus being his shield and exceeding great reward, Abram and his seed would not experience death and the horrors that accompany it. Jesus the Son of the Living God, showed him what he was missing by having him as his shield and exceeding great reward.

Abram would be the first to receive this great reward and welcome all of his children into the kingdom of God as revealed in Matthew chapter 8 verse 11.

Here’s the text:

Matthew 8:11  And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

Eternal life in heaven, is the reward given to Abram's seed. All of Abram’s children whether through the bloodline or adoption would inherit eternal life and never see death.

John 8:51  Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

This text refers to the second death, as it’s been appointed unto all men to die but those who come to Christ are considered the seed of Abraham.

Mark 12:26  And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

Mark 12:27  He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.

Abram’s not dead, he’s alive in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus reveals him as being seated in the kingdom of heaven, comforting Lazarus, who had been sick and poor on earth.

In Luke chapter 18, we read about Lazarus and the rich man. In the account Lazarus is in the bosom of Abraham. Abraham is like a father who picks up a child (Lazarus) and holds him close to his chest to comfort him after he’s been hurt.

This reveals the comfort God’s children, receive when they finally reach the promise land in heaven.

Sometimes we wonder about all of the suffering, all of the sickness, and death on earth, but we must remember it's all temporary. One day we will be comforted and will be recompensed for all the we've gone through. We will be reunited with loved ones again. For this reason Jesus died.

God made a covenant with Abram that day and the benefits of that covenant are available to all his seed, rather by bloodline or adoption.

Isaiah 9:2  The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
