This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Melanie Furtado. Melanie is a Canadian sculptor and art educator who won this year’s prestigious Médaille Bronze at the Salon des Artistes Français. She first grabbed my attention with her fantastic “Women: States of Being” series, in which she showcases naked women of diverse ages, races, and body types in states of quiet contemplation. She creates her sculptures by adding pieces, little by little, one at a time, leaving the textures of these pieces of clay and her fingerprints as part of the final piece of art. While the focus may start on the body, its the depth of emotion she captures in the faces that really draws you in.

In our conversation, Melanie shares what draws her to scultpure and the human form, which body part is her favorite to sculpt, how the best things about Paris are also the worst, and so much more.

About Us
Who will be the world's next Salvador Dali, Thierry Mugler, or Josephine Baker, launching a new wave of the avant-garde? How are new artforms created, developed, honed? And where exactly do today's artists and creatives find their inspirations?

Each week, join City of Muses host Jennifer Geraghty as she sits down with contemporary artists, poets, dancers, designers, and performers to explore what inspires them, what their creative processes are like, where their ideas come from, and how Paris has helped or hindered their dreams come true.

Inspiration and creativity meet in Paris, the City of Muses.
