Through the life of Daniel we learn how he was recognized as having an excellent spirit. The excellence in Daniel's life was achieved not by a gift from God but by choices that he made in his life. Like Daniel we are not to allow the spirit of this world to taint our lives. Daniel also chose the right kind of friends.
