After Jephthae, the son of a concubine, was banished from his family, and the people of Ammon came to war with Israel, the men of Galaad offered to make him ruler over them if he would lead them into battle. He agreed and vowed to the Lord that if he would deliver the men of Ammon into his hand, he would sacrifice the first person to greet him from his house upon his return. His only daughter ran out to meet him, and so he sacrificed her to fulfill his vow.
