Today is the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The day on which we remember the extermination of the Jews.

The denial of the other, persecuted for no reason whatsoever, even if it is difficult to admit a reason for any atrocity.

A dismembered population to which dignity has been denied both as a collective and as a group of individuals.

Entering the camps, their identities were torn away, even before their lives, and transformed in a number.

After all these years, the fury of the Nazis and of those keen executioners and collaborators in many regions of the world - that blind fury - seems like smoke in which the single murderers appear indistinct, with no personality because they are all united in the black hole of atrocity.

For all this, we invite you today to remember the name of one of those murdered, one of the names read on the stumbling blocks, or on one of the many tombstones filling Europe with the names of the assassinated, look for them in history books, in novels, on Wikipedia.

Remember at least one of them this evening, tell your children, as an act of respect for who has passed away in the darkest hour, for the never born children.

To tell the world that they were and still are, and that who exterminated them wasn’t and still isn’t anybody.

To respect who has been, not to forget, and to say never again

Oggi è la giornata della memoria.

La giornata che ricorda lo sterminio degli ebrei.

La negazione dell'altro, perseguitato senza ragione alcuna, ammesso che una ragione possa esistere per qualsiasi atrocità.

Un popolo smembrato al quale si è negata dignità come collettività e come insieme di individui.

Entrati nel campo l'identità veniva strappata, prima ancora della vita, e trasformata in un numero

A distanza di tanto tempo, il furore dei nazisti e di chi si fece volenteroso carnefice e collaboratore in tante regioni del mondo, quel furore cieco appare come un fumo in cui i singoli assassini appaiono indistinti privi di personalità perché accomunati tutti nel buco nero dell'atrocità.

Per questo vi invitiamo oggi a ricordare un nome di chi è stato sterminato, un nome letto su una pietra dell'inciampo, su una delle tante lapidi di cui l'Europa è piena con i nomi degli assassinati, cercatelo sui libri di storia, sui romanzi, su Wikipedia.

Ricordatene almeno uno questa sera, ditelo ai vostri figli, come atto di rispetto per chi se n’è andato nell'ora più scura, per i figli che non sono potuti nascere.

Per dire al mondo che loro erano e sono e che chi li ha assassinati non era e non è nessuno.

Per rispettare chi fu, per non dimenticare e per dire mai più.
