The Huntsville Prison Siege of 1974 was one of the longest hostage-taking events in U.S. history. Three prisoners, led by heroin kingpin Federico Carrasco, carried out an armed takeover of the educational complex at the Huntsville Unit and managed to hold over a dozen hostages captive for 11 excruciating days. The siege would end with a bizarre escape plan, a bloody gunfight, and the deaths of four people.

I lived in Huntsville multiple times. I was originally scared to move because of the prisons but as time went on the count horn that is heard in the whole town is oddly comforting and is like a weird sound of home. It's normal to see prisoners around town...no they're not in orange or stripes...all white. It's normal to see the white buses through out town. Huntsville is built on the criminal Justice system..prison system employees majority of the town..a large amount of law enforcement attended Sam Houston state since they have the best criminal Justice program..the prisons, especially walls (it was weird hearing it called the Huntsville unit) is nice to look at. It's in the middle of town, literally backs up to the university. Pretty much any building you see with red brick-including parts of the university were built by prisoners. They have an awesome prison museum too!!!

Hi! I live and teach in Huntsville. I also went to college here. Living in a prison city is actually very normal feeling. We do here roll call siren everyday, trustees actually work on the school grounds during the summer to do landscaping. On my way home I see convicts walking the prison track. When there's an execution you can drive by and see protests and everything. The prison rodeo is also well known and the top floor of the hospital in town is for prisoners. It's normal to go to the county fair and see trustees cleaning up the place. The campus is actually very close to the unit, so close you can walk by it on the way to class. If y you think about it- if a prisoner escapes, they aren't staying in town! They're getting to the next town as quick as they can!
