Experts predicted last fall that this year’s flu season would be especially bad. So far, those predictions have been right on the money. To top it off, some projections have estimated that this year’s version of the flu shot could be merely ten percent effective in warding off the disease. For the first time ever, the CDC has officially declared that the flu is “widespread” in every single continental U.S. state. Earlier this week in Texas, an entire school district shut down due to flu concerns. So why is this year such a tough year for the flu? Dr. Larry Madoff, Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Immunization for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, joins Dan in the NightSide studio to talk about why the flu has hit so hard this year, whether it’s too late to get your flu shot, and how to prevent or limit your exposure.
