Maine is the first state in the union to hold companies responsible for the cost of recycling their own trash. Just last week, Governor Janet Mills signed the first extended producer responsibility (EPR) law holding corporations accountable for the packaging waste they create such as bottles, boxes, bags, and the like. The Environmental Protection Agency says the U.S. created 82.2 million tons of packaging trash in 2018 and China no longer buys it. Is Maine's new law a step in the right direction?
