DeRosa, creative director of NWC and Project Upland, an ultra-popular source for upland news, strategy, recipes and more. I was introduced to DeRosa in mid-2020 when I joined the Project Upland team as its current issues writer, and it introduced me to a brand new world outside the problems West Virginia sportsmen and women face. It's been a fascinating journey so far, and I wanted the OutPost audience to hear straight from me and DeRosa some of the issues plaguing and helping the hunting community. 15 MAR 2021 · Welcome to Volume 2, Episode 2! Today, Andrew takes a virtual trip to Lost Creek Farm in Lost Creek, W.Va., to talk to Mike Costello. Costello is a native Appalachian, growing up in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and a graduate of the then-P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University. Not only is Costello a media-minded fella, he's part owner and operator at Lost Creek Farm, a relatively small but innovative farm in Harrison County. Costello and his partner Amy Dawson, who was unavailable to join the episode due to prior engagements, describe themselves as, "Two West Virginia cooks and farmers creating and sharing story-rich mountain cuisine." They operate an Instagram account (@lostcreekfarm), as well as produce their own podcast, The Pickle Shelf Radio Hour, as well as videos and other pieces of media to share their work and thoughts. Their work was also showcased on Anthony Bourdain's CNN show "Parts Unknown" a few months before the famous chef and world traveler committed suicide in France. Andrew and Mike touch on many topics, though none more important as food insecurity in West Virginia and greater region but also Appalachian resiliency and what that truly means. Other topics include wild game cooking, foraging and goals for the farm.

As we near the close of the year, I thought it would be good idea to highlight an organization on both the state and national scale: Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. BHA is a nonprofit organization that was founded 2004 in Oregon and has since been a voice for sportsmen and women across the country by “seeking to ensure North America's outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing in a natural setting, through education and work on behalf of wild public lands and waters.” BHA was integral in the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, and the West Virginia chapter is currently fighting against the redesignation of the New River Gorge, something that would strip hunters of more than 4,000 acres of public land access – areas of the NRG that are prime for whitetail and duck hunting. 9 NOV 2020 · Welcome to Volume 1, Episode 2! In this episode, Andrew discusses bowhunting culture and how crossbows fit into it with TenPoint Crossbow Technologies' Marketing Coordinator Bryan Zabitski. Bryan is a lifelong hunter who's first bowhunting experience was with a TenPoint crossbow, albeit around the turn of the century. Since that first hunt, he began working for the Ohio-based company and quickly moved up the ladder to where he is now. In his time with TenPoint, he's noticed how the mindset around crossbows has begun to shift as more people have become accepting of the weapon as an ethical means of harvesting an animal. Still, there are some who don't think they belong in the woods during archery season. The two discuss all of this and more in Episode 2, so tune in – this is a conversation you don't want to miss.

In the very first episode, Andrew dives into West Virginia's own setter breed, the Old Hemlock Setter. A bloodline bred by the famous author, artist and bird hunter George Bird Evans, Andrew discusses with his former colleague and good friend, David Schlake, what it's like owning one of these highly sought after bird dogs. The two also discuss how David's dog, Sage, handles western hunting since her bloodline was bred to point primarily woodcock and ruffed grouse, upcoming hunts – including one they're going on together – and more.
