Voices from the Bridge: Genoa Bridge Podcasts

  • Genoa, the supply chain of companies that made the bridge

21 JUL 2020 · Genoa’s Ponte San Giorgio is the outcome of team work involving not only the thousand engineers, technicians and workers who, in little more than twelve months, completed the work, but also the chain of supplier companies, examples of excellence from all over Italy that made their contribution to giving Genoa its bridge back. In all, 330 large, medium and small companies of suppliers and sub-suppliers – coordinated by the Webuild Group which, together with Fincantieri, carried out the work – were engaged in the construction of the bridge, 99% of which were Italian businesses. In this podcast, some of them describe their experiences on a building site like no other.

  • EPISODE III – THE BRIDGE SEEN FROM OUTSIDE

6 MAY 2020 · A few weeks before the completion of the works and the inauguration of Genoa's new bridge, the sense of anticipation in the city was tangible. Private citizens, business people and teachers from the schools nearest the construction site recall what the city had gone through in the previous two years and spoke of their expectations for the new Ponte San Giorgio. Their eye-witness accounts were collected after the spectacular laying of the last stretch of the road deck, a ceremony in which the prime minister Giuseppe Conte also took part, and looked forward to the month of August 2020, when the bridge was due to be inaugurated. The completion of the piers and the deck, the final length of which was 3,500 feet, heralded the last milestone of a major work.

  • EPISODE II – THE BRIDGE SEEN FROM INSIDE

27 APR 2020 · More than a thousand people were involved in the construction of Genoa's Ponte San Giorgio. Their stories, their extraordinary commitment, the expectations surrounding this infrastructure are covered in this podcast, which reconstructs the various roles in the construction of a major work. • EPISODE I – FROM THE DRAWING BOARD TO THE REAL WORLD

15 APR 2020 · From the drawing board to its construction. The story of the Ponte San Giorgio told by Webuild’s engineer Nicola Meistro, appointed Chief Executive Officer of Pergenova, the joint venture established by Webuild, together with Fincantieri, to construct the bridge. The secrets of a major project are revealed through the words of the engineer who coordinated the on-site works from the outset, that – in terms of time, quality and construction methods – marked a new record in the history of construction in Italy. As Meistro explains in the podcast, the result was achieved through the great efforts of the workers. “Whoever is involved in the construction of a major work,” explains Meistro, "is always deeply bound up with what he does. That was especially so in this case because we realised that we were being watched by the nation, and perhaps beyond. You could feel everyone’s eyes on you.”
