Canada has won the Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer after defeating Sweden in a penalty shootout on Friday. The two teams tied 1-1 after regulation and extra time. For Canada, it was their first Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer while Sweden took the silver for the second straight Olympics. 5 AUG 2021 · I’m Seth Vertelney with Goal, and this is the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The U.S. women’s national team defeated Australia 4-3 on Thursday in the Olympic bronze medal match. Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd each scored two goals in what could be the veteran duo’s final appearance at a major tournament for the U.S. Lloyd, who is 39, hinted after the game that she could be announcing her retirement soon, saying: "I haven't made any official announcement yet but obviously I'm at the tail end of my career. "Physically I feel really good but at some point I have to hang up the boots and live life.” The U.S. entered the Olympics as favorites to win gold but will have to be content with the first bronze medal in the program’s history. In the gold medal match, Sweden and Canada are set to face off, but after the game was originally scheduled for 11am local time on Friday, it has now been moved to 9pm local time to mitigate the heat and humidity in Tokyo.

  • Olympic Soccer Tournament nearing it's conclusion as USWNT play Australia for Bronze and Canada face Sweden for Gold

4 AUG 2021 · Goal's Seth Vertelney has the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The women’s soccer tournament at the Olympics has reached its final two matches, as Sweden and Canada will battle for the gold medal, while the U.S. will face Australia for the bronze. Sweden has been the tournament’s most impressive team having won all five of their matches so far, while Canada is coming off a huge 1-0 win over the U.S. in the semi-final, which was the first time they have beaten their rivals to the south in 20 years. Both Sweden and Canada are looking to win their first gold medal in women’s soccer. In the bronze medal game, the U.S. is looking to salvage something from what has been a disappointing tournament by defeating Australia, who are looking to medal for the first time in women’s soccer. • USWNT crash out of gold medal contention at the Olympic Games after 1-0 loss to Canada in Japan

2 AUG 2021 · Goal's Seth Vertelney with Goal has the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The U.S. women’s national team will not win a gold medal at the Olympics, which was confirmed after Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Canada in the semi-final. Jesse Fleming scored a penalty kick for Canada in the second half, and the U.S. was unable to find a response as they crashed out of gold medal contention. For Canada, it was their first win over the U.S. in 20 years. It has been a disappointing tournament for the U.S., who entered as the favorites for gold but have won just one of their five games in regulation so far, while being shut out three times after entering the tournament without being shut out in four years. The U.S. will face Australia in the bronze medal match on Thursday in a rematch of a group-stage match at this Olympics which ended 0-0. Canada, meanwhile, will face Sweden for the gold medal, as both sides aim to win gold for the first time in their history.

  • Le Sommer on target for OL Reign, while Leroux takes aim at former Orlando Pride coach

1 AUG 2021 · Seth Vertelney has all the American women’s soccer news you need to know today, from Goal. In NWSL action on Saturday, OL Reign grabbed a much-needed 2-0 win over Racing Louisville. France star Eugénie Le Sommer scored both goals for OL Reign, her first goals in the NWSL since joining from French power Lyon. In Saturday’s other NWSL match, the Orlando Pride drew the North Carolina Courage 1-1 in their first match under interim head coach Becky Burleigh. After the game, Pride goalscorer Sydney Leroux took a thinly-veiled dig at former coach Marc Skinner, who left the club at midseason to take over Manchester United. Leroux said she was happy to have, quote, the feeling of someone wanting to be here for us. Meanwhile in Japan, the U.S. women’s national team are making final preparations for their Olympic semi-final showdown against regional rivals Canada. The winner of the U.S.-Canada match will face the winner of Sweden’s game against Australia in the gold medal game.

  • Focus on semi-final clash with Canada, and the NWSL settles with teenager Moultri

31 JUL 2021 · Seth Vertelney with Goal, brings you all the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. After defeating the Netherlands in the Olympic quarter-final on Friday, the U.S. will now turn its attention to Monday’s semi-final against regional rival Canada. The U.S. has been dominant against the Canadians in recent years, as Canada has not won against the Americans since 2001. In NWSL news, the league announced that it has reached a settlement with Portland Thorns teenager Olivia Moultrie that will allow her to continue playing in the league. Moultrie, who is 15, sued the league in May for the right to play, arguing that the NWSL’s rule preventing players under 18 from signing contracts violated antitrust laws. A judge initially ruled in Moultrie’s favor in June, allowing her to sign a three-year contract with the Thorns. She made her NWSL debut in July, becoming the youngest player in league history.

  • Preparations continue for USWNT ahead of Olympic quarter-final with Netherlands whilst Skinner swaps Orlando for Manchester United

29 JUL 2021 · Goal's Seth Vertelney has the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The U.S. women’s national team is continuing their preparations for Friday’s Olympic quarterfinal against the Netherlands, a game that will be a rematch of the World Cup final two years ago. The Dutch attack has been in amazing form so far in Japan, with the team scoring an incredible 21 goals in their first three matches. They have been vulnerable defensively though, as they have also given up eight total goals. The Americans will look to improve their offense in the game against the Dutch, having been shut out in two of their three games at the Olympics so far. Should the U.S. defeat the Netherlands, they will face either Canada or Brazil in the semi-final on Monday. In other news, Manchester United officially confirmed Marc Skinner as their new head coach. Skinner resigned as coach of the NWSL’s Orlando Pride earlier this week.

  • Improvement required for USWNT in the Tokyo Olympic Games

28 JUL 2021 · Goal's Seth Vertelney brings you the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The U.S. women’s national team has advanced past the group stage at the Olympics, but they’ll need to show improvement if they are to take home gold in Japan. After entering the tournament as strong favourites, the U.S. could only manage one win, one draw and one defeat in their three group stage matches. A 3-0 defeat to Sweden to open the tournament was an especially shocking result. Now the U.S. must regroup ahead of the knockout stage, where a difficult quarterfinal match with the Netherlands awaits on Friday. The game will be a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final, where the U.S. defeated the Dutch 2-0 in France to win their second straight World Cup title. The U.S. will be aiming to avoid their second straight Olympic quarterfinal exit, after losing to Sweden in the last eight in Rio five years ago. That defeat came after the U.S. had won gold at each of the previous three Olympics.
