Unlocking the Secrets to Slowing and Reversing MS Brain Aging with Dr. Antonio Scalfari

2 FEB 2023 · Welcome to another episode of BeeWellwithMS. In this episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Antonio Scalfari, a leading neurologist and researcher in the field of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Dr. Scalfari is a consultant neurologist at the tertiary centre for the management of MS and neuro-inflammatory diseases and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London. He has authored several scientific articles and participates often as a speaker at international conferences and webinars. Our conversation revolves around the fascinating topic of aging and the impact it has on our brain health, particularly for those living with MS. We delve into the mechanisms of aging and what we can do to slow and even reverse the aging process. Dr. Scalfari shares actionable protocols and tips that you can incorporate into your daily life, giving you the knowledge and tools to offset the biological effects of aging. We explore topics such as the Mediterranean diet, the existence of the longevity gene, and whether aging is a disease that we can bio-hack. We also discuss the impact of aging on muscle mass, grip strength, and uric acid antioxidant levels, as well as the age of peak MS disease development.Dr. Scalfari provides insight into the process of natural MS progression and introduces the concept of smouldering MS. We also touch on immunosenescence, the process of aging of immune and brain cells, and the important process of remyelination of the central nervous system. The episode concludes with Dr. Scalfari sharing intermittent fasting protocols and actionable steps to help offset the effects of aging. By the end of this episode, you will have a deep understanding of the biology of aging and the tools you need to offset its effects on your brain health, whether you live with MS or not. In this episode, I am joined by Dr Antonio Scalfari, consultant Neurologist at the tertiary centre for the management of MS and neuro-inflammatory diseases (Imperial College Healthcare Trust; Charing Cross and St Mary Hospitals) and at the neurology department of Northwest London Healthcare Trust. He also runs his private Neurology practice in London.

He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, where he contributes to the teaching activities for medical students. His main research interest is in Multiple Sclerosis epidemiology and prognostic factors. He has authored several scientific articles in highly impact journals and he also participates often as a speaker at international conferences and webinars and seminars in MS. He continues his research activity in collaboration with other international academic orgnisations.

Antonio is one of the first Neurologists in the world who has dedicated his time researching the prognostic factors of progression in MS and he discovering that the process of natural progression of MS as independent of the MS relapses, there is something more that drives the natural ms progression, and he introduced the concept of smouldering MS and we will talk about this later, he is also investigating the impact of ageing process on MS brain health.

In this interview we discuss mechanisms of aging and what can we all do to slow and reverse aging process. This episode includes of basic science, actionable protocols, right down to the details of what to do, by the end you will have knowledge of the biology of aging and how to offset it.
