  • Tony Kemp Podcast: Warriors lose again, Sharks surge continues, & special guest Daniel Anderson

29 APR 2024 · Round eight of the 2024 NRL Premiership is in the books, which means it's time for episode eight of the Tony Kemp Podcast! Every Monday during the 2024 NRL season, Kemp - the former Warriors coach and Kiwis representative - is joined by Martin Devlin, renowned sports broadcaster and now host of It's Only Sport on The Platform. Together, they recap all the main talking points in rugby league's biggest club competition. After eight rounds are the main contenders beginning to make their move into the upper areas of the NRL ladder? The Cronulla Sharks are top of the table for the third successive week boasting a 6-1 record, following another big win, this time over the Raiders in Canberra 40-0. The Sharks are joined by the Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers, Manly Sea Eagles and Brisbane Broncos inside the top five - four of those teams made the finals in 2023, and look a good chance at contending for the top four this season. Just behind are the Dolphins, who suffered a surprise loss to the under-strength Newcastle Knights 18-14 at home. The Sydney Roosters - who put 60 on the Dragons on Anzac Day - and the Canterbury Bulldogs - who enjoyed the bye - round out the top eight. Kempy and Marty recap the most important games of the weekend including the Panthers holding off the North Queensland Cowboys and the Broncos blowing away the Wests Tigers. Then, it's Up The Wahs - a segment dedicated solely to the Warriors, who again endured a shock result, this time losing to the previously winless Gold Coast Titans 27-24 in Auckland on Anzac Day. The result sees the Warriors sit 12th, just one point outside the top eight. Can the Warriors' drop in form lately be entirely linked to injuries, or should they be putting these seemingly weaker teams away regardless? Kempy and Marty answer that and more. Next it's He's A Ledge, and this week it's a man who played a major role in the emergence of the Warriors as an NRL heavyweight in the early 21st century - Daniel Anderson. The 56-year-old coached the Mount Smart club for three and a half years, guiding them to a Grand Final appearance in 2002. He's had other head coaching roles with St Helens in the Super League, and the Parramatta Eels as well. Anderson talks about how the 2024 season is shaping up and the main contenders, his current role with the Roosters, the latest around his health following a surfing accident in December 2022 that left Anderson a quadriplegic, and more. Then, Kempy and Marty go head-to-head debating six rugby league topics, including whether or not the Warriors' top four chances for this season are over, and who out of the bottom four teams - the Eels, Tigers, Titans, and South Sydney Rabbitohs - has the best chance at moving up the ladder. Kempy hands out the Effluex clean-up award for the player, coach or team who did their job better than anyone else on the weekend - someone who rolled up their sleeves and turned gunk into gold. And to finish things off, Kempy lists his five best teams in the NRL right now on TK's Top 5.

  • Tony Kemp Podcast: Dragons shock Warriors, Broncos blitz Raiders, Cameron George joins the show

22 APR 2024 · The Tony Kemp podcast is back for episode seven! Seven rounds are in the books and the NRL for 2024 remains a tight one. The Cronulla Sharks are the pace setters for a second-straight week, which will no doubt surprise a few, after their impressive 42-6 win over the North Queensland Cowboys at home. The Sharks have five wins from six games. Other contenders such as the Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers, Manly Sea Eagles and Brisbane Broncos all won to solidify their places inside the top eight, while the Dolphins caused the upset of the round with a mammoth 44-16 win over the Parramatta Eels. Four points separates first through ninth on the table, with three teams who made the finals in 2023 currently on the outside looking in. Kempy and Marty discuss and dissect the key games and what stood out to them most. Following that, it's Up The Wahs - a segment dedicated solely to the Warriors, who were on the receiving end of an absolute thumping, losing 30-12 to the St. George-Illawarra Dragons on Friday night. Kempy and Marty question whether this performance was coming following an up-and-down draw for the Warriors against Manly a week earlier - should people panic or was it just a blip? The Warriors face the Gold Coast Titans at home on Anzac Day next, which is arguably the easiest of fixtures for them to bounce back given the Titans remain winless so far this year. Next it's He's A Ledge, and this week it's Warriors CEO Cameron George who joins the show. Aside from the Dragons result it's been a positive week for the club with the news of Penrith prop James Fisher-Harris signing a four-year deal from 2025 and rumours Jett Cleary - younger brother of Nathan and son of Ivan - could be on his way to the Mount Smart club as well. George answers questions surrounding those two players, while also shedding light on how far away the Warriors-themed bar in Auckland is. Then, Kempy and Marty go head-to-head debating six rugby league topics, including whether or not the Warriors' next clash against Gold Coast is a must-win, and which team alongside Penrith, Brisbane and Melbourne can challenge for the premiership. Kempy hands out the Effluex clean-up award for the player, coach or team who did their job better than anyone else on the weekend - someone who rolled up their sleeves and turned gunk into gold. And to finish things off, Kempy lists his five best teams in the NRL right now on TK's Top 5.

  • Tony Kemp Podcast: Warriors & Sea Eagles draw, Sharks top NRL table, Matty Johns joins the show

15 APR 2024 · Episode six of the Tony Kemp Podcast is here. We're six rounds into the NRL season, and it's as tough as can be to pick out the competition pace setters. We have a new table topper in the form of the Cronulla Sharks who defeated the hapless South Sydney Rabbitohs 34-22 and now boast a 4-1 record. The Melbourne Storm are second on the ladder with the same number of wins and losses, and teams placed third through sixth are all tied on eight competition points. The Warriors remain inside the top eight - just - following their 22-all draw with the Manly Sea Eagles, while the likes of the Sydney Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, Parramatta Eels and Newcastle Knights - three of whom were finals teams in 2023 - are on the outside looking in when it comes to finals spots (not that the race for the finals should be talked about so early in the year). Kempy and Marty work their way through all eight games this past weekend and the results that standout. Then, it's Up The Wahs - a segment dedicated solely to the Warriors. The lone New Zealand NRL club hosted their fourth game in six to begin the season, and despite a slow start riddled with errors, the hosts dug their way out of a 16-0 hole to draw with their opponents. Who should be happier with sharing the points - the Warriors or Sea Eagles? Was the penalty call against Manly's Josh Aloiai that sent the game to golden point the right decision? Kempy and Marty answer all the key questions. This week on He's A Ledge, it's a big one. A man who represented Australia, New South Wales, Newcastle and Cronulla, but has become more known for his successful broadcasting career, first on Nine's The Footy Show years back and now on his self-named telecast on Fox Sports - Matty Johns. Johns shares his thoughts on how the Warriors are going, why there isn't a standout team just yet in this year's competition, golden point, the Josh Schuster situation, and more. After that, Kempy and Marty go head-to-head debating six rugby league topics, including whether or not golden point should be changed or eradicated from the game altogether, and who the next South Sydney coach will be if Jason Demetriou is sacked. Kempy hands out the Effluex clean-up award for the player, coach or team who did their job better than anyone else on the weekend - someone who rolled up their sleeves and turned gunk into gold. And to finish things off, Kempy lists his five best teams in the NRL right now on TK's Top 5.

  • Tony Kemp Podcast: Warriors bag third-straight win, Latrell Mitchell's antics, & more

8 APR 2024 · Strap yourself in, another episode of the Tony Kemp Podcast is here! The NRL season is beginning to take shape after round five concluded on Sunday night with a bounce back victory for the Canberra Raiders, who hammered the Parramatta Eels 41-8 at home. Currently on top of the table sit the Dolphins with three wins from four games and a bye, just ahead of the North Queensland Cowboys on points difference, who themselves have four wins from five. The Warriors have moved up to sixth after an impressive 34-4 road win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The Gold Coast Titans remain the only winless team in the competition, but the bye and a better plus-minus means they are second-to-last on the ladder just ahead of the Rabbitohs. Kempy and Marty go through all eight games with a fine-tooth comb and pick out the key elements to discuss, including what was arguably the game of the year so far with the Storm beating the Brisbane Broncos 34-32 in Melbourne, and the Manly Sea Eagles upsetting the three-time defending champion Penrith Panthers 32-18. Following that, it's Up The Wahs - a talk segment solely focussed on the Warriors, and why not when they're in such good form! The Auckland-based NRL club are three from five so far this season and looking better by the week. Their 30-point win over the Rabbitohs is their third successive victory, their biggest of the young season and solidifies their place inside the top eight. Is the fullback debate finally over with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad's solid return in the one jumper? Should hooker Wayde Egan's form be rewarded with State of Origin selection for New South Wales? All of that and more discussed between Kempy and Marty. This week on He's A Ledge, the pair catch up with Richie Morgan from Warrior Nation. Richie's arguably the club's most passionate fan living on the other side of the ditch, and has done a stellar job for over a decade now at bringing together Australian-based Warriors fans for gamedays and meet-ups, as well as banging the drum and leading the chants at the matches outside of New Zealand. He discusses the atmosphere at Stadium Australia on the weekend in what was a South Sydney home game, but at times sounded like a clash in the Warriors' backyard. Then, Kempy and Marty go head-to-head debating a handful of rugby league subjects, including whether or not the Warriors have the best fans in the NRL, if Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco should consider retiring after suffering the 10th concussion of his career, and the case to get rid of the bunker. Kempy hands out the Effluex clean-up award for the player, coach or team who did their job better than anyone else on the weekend - someone who rolled up their sleeves and turned gunk into gold. It's a slightly left-field choice this week from Kempy. And to finish things off, he lists his five best teams in the NRL right now on TK's Top 5. Spoiler alert, the Warriors aren't quite back on top just yet.

After that it's Up The Wahs, a segment dedicated solely to the Warriors. This week on He's A Ledge, Kempy and Marty are joined by former Kiwis, Warriors and Titans centre, and a man who was one of the very best in the world during his playing days, Clinton Toopi.
