  • Ep 16.2: A School-Mandated-Literature Book Review

25 FEB 2020 · Clare Zhang and I continue our book review, this time of the literature we read during our freshman and sophomore years. Prepare yourself to hear probably-wrong summaries, our memories of group presentations on "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", and a tangent on the sexiness of vampire neck-biting (thank you "How to Read Literature Like a Professor"). To make room for our 15 minutes of raving about "Song of Solomon", I am sorry to tell you I omitted our discussion on a few books. My deepest apologies to the die-hard fans of "The Baron In The Trees", "The Thief And The Dogs", and "The Great Gatsby" (they're actually all great books, it's just that our discussion of them wasn't all that insightful). Hope you enjoy the episode! -Kaylen Music wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US City Life by Artificial.Music | https://soundcloud.com/artificial-music Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 16.1: A School-Mandated-Literature Book Review

26 JAN 2020 · As second-semester high school seniors, my buddy Clare Zhang and I decided to take a look back at all of the books we've had to read for school over the past 4 years. In this first part, we look over works from senior and freshman year, including grade-wide favorites such as "Unflattening" and breeze-throughs like "Omeros". Unfortunately, I did have to cut out our discussion on some works to keep a reasonable episode time duration. So if you only came for Huckleberry Finn, Beowulf, Oedipus Rex, Antigone, or Macbeth - sorry to disappoint. Fun Quiz for this episode- Can you guess which character I was doing an impression of when saying, "I was 15 when I came- Now I'm 35!" I hope you enjoy us trying to remember plot points of these classic works of literature! And, of course, that your 2020 has gotten off to a positive start. :) -Kaylen Music: wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Cyan by [friendzoned] | https://soundcloud.com/friendzonedbeats Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 15.2: A Look Back at 2019

30 DEC 2019 · Comrade Ayesha Khawaja and I continue our review of 2019 (until she had to leave, after which I had to go SOLO - how could she?). We cover July through December, recalling "Old Town Road", ranting about the Amazon wildfires, discussing Trump's impeachment, as well as MANY other things. After doing a total of TWO (2) Look Back's of the year, I think 2019 overall was pretty alright. It's the end of the decade too, which is strange to think about. I wonder what the 2010's are going to be known for. I hope you enjoy our review, and have a happy new year! :) -Kaylen [Here's a helpful video montage of the decade, then the year: Vox "2019, in 6 minutes" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnK5mG5u8Hg ] Music Uplifting Funk Pop Instrumental by taiiga | https://soundcloud.com/paavoilves Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 15.1: A Look Back at 2019

30 DEC 2019 · 2019 is almost over... which mEANS ANOTHER ANNUAL RECAP OF THE YEAR!! As per tradition (built over 2 eps), I invited my pal Ayesha to talk about (nearly) everything that happened in 2019. We laugh (in fear) over the Fyre Festival's Evian water meme, roast the Operation Varsity Blues scandal, and marvel at the black hole photo, discussing events from January to June. It feels like a mere 12 months ago I was recording the last look back....strange. Enjoy the episode, and don't forget to check out the second half of the year! -Kaylen Music Uplifting Funk Pop Instrumental by taiiga | https://soundcloud.com/paavoilves Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 14: From Teachers, To Students - Handling the College Admissions Process

13 DEC 2019 · As many anxious high school seniors know, a large amount of early decisions from colleges were sent out this Thursday. I knew that, no matter what, emotions would be turbulent and solace required. So, a few days beforehand, I went around asking teachers for what they would like to say to students going through the college admissions process, and compiled their responses into this episode. This can be one of the happiest or stressful moments of your life so far. I hope you receive the news you want, and if you got accepted, congratulations! If not, well, let's keep going - we are going to get through these next few weeks. Thank you Sra. Van Duzer, Mr. Thomas, Ms. Goetz, Mr. Goetz, Mr. Davis, Ms. Peyer, and Mr. Stillman for your words of advice and comfort. I hope that this episode was helpful to you, and remember to be considerate for those around you. -Kaylen Music Subtle Break by Ghostrifter Official | https://soundcloud.com/ghostrifter-official Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 13: Insult His Meat! A Lesson from the Dobe Ju/'hoansi [Minisode]

1 DEC 2019 · A mini anthropology lesson! For free! Incredible! Who needs college when you have 11 minute minisodes! (Haha just kidding,... unless...?) As per suggestion from my swolemate Katie (check out Ep 11!), I share a story from anthropology class that I told at least 5 separate people immediately after learning. A hilarious but strikingly fascinating way to manage overprideful hunters, this facet of Dobe Ju/'hoansi culture is something I think we can all integrate a little into our own lives. INSULT! HIS! MEAT! A necessary burden we all must take for the good of our society. Truly. • Ep 12: [Let's Go Clubbing with...] The RM Black Maskers

10 NOV 2019 · Every time fall rolls around, you know what that means... Time for the RM FALL MUSICAL!! 🍁🎭 In the first edition of the Let's Go Clubbing series (yes, night clubs aha ha just kidding... unless..?) I followed our drama club as they prepare for their autumn production of "The Addams Family". I got to talk to... 2 weeks before opening night: - Nikita Karitsky (lighting chief) 2 days before opening night: - Tudor Postulache and Lilah Katz (principals) - Remond Arteche (props chief) - Sierra Villemez (props chief) - Todd Rosemblatt, Sami Jones-Quartey, Guy Felix, Jonathan Haddock, JJ (ensemble) Post-opening night: - Selin Apaydin (assistant director) - Stephanie Wang (pit chief) - Rina Levy (technical director) Getting to meet so many cast members of all different roles made me appreciate the musical as I watched it, seeing everything come together, from costumes to choreography to harmonies. There's such an amazing feeling in the air, witnessing what so many students have put countless hours into. It's just amazing. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode. Go watch the fall musical! • Ep 11: Take Care! A Health and Wellness Reminder #Swolemates

8 NOV 2019 · I know that a lot of teenagers put their health on the back-burner in favor of that sTuDenT GRinD, but my friend and I wanted to CHANGE that (or at least remind you guys to take care of your health). (Un)professional health nut Katie Zhang and I discuss her favorite health gurus ("I am a straight male, but I would get with Dr. Mike"), becoming the Voltron of your best self, the secret to a long life (from what we've read), peer pressure as a tool to maintain habits, and more! At the end of the episode I talk about some of the health research that we weren't able to mention. High schoolers (ahem, *seniors*) are busy. That's a bit of an inevitable fact. But that doesn't mean that you should completely disregard your health, especially your sleep cycle. The habits we create will carry on to our adulthood, and we need to make sure that we take care of our health now since the long-term ramifications will be more serious. I hope you all learned something from this episode. Get more sleep, find good friends (aka SWOLEMATE), and take care. -Kaylen Research sheet: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16y63s-2E0q9sHJqRS7ytacXMiyXJY_sJXTPArbJUhOk/edit?usp=sharing Pamela: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVRfsT_ASBZk10o0An7Ucg Natacha Oceane: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjfG0dyMUiqKleUnkX6zBrA Dr. Mike: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0QHWhjbe5fGJEPz3sVb6nw Music wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Subtle Break by Ghostrifter Official | https://soundcloud.com/ghostrifter-official Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 10: The Student Athlete Grind TM

20 OCT 2019 · After finishing up the high school golf season for the last time, I wondered what it felt to be an athlete for a different sport, and furthermore, what it felt to be a really committed one. Personally, I play golf but not super seriously (as in, compete in 10+ tournaments in the summer), but I was curious to find out about students who really go HARD for their spot, who are actually on the Student Athlete Grind TM 💪😤💦. For this episode, I interviewed two student athletes from our high school. - Swimmer Katherine Blake dives into the world of waking up at 4am for 2 hour swim practices (before school!), the importance of balance, and her goal to educate people that swimming is more than just about winning. - Volleyball player and high school team captain Laila Rogers discusses the role mental strength plays in her game, dealing with injuries while playing, and having her hard work pay off in the end (literally, as in a full-ride scholarship). I had a lot of fun talking to Katherine and Laila about their commitment to their sport, but moreover, I found it fascinating to hear about their ambitions beyond athletics, their dreams for things outside of their game. It's a nice surprise when I learn more about people and they go outside of my expected image of them (not to stereotype, but you know what I mean). Just a note, a little off-topic, but I encourage everyone to try as many sports as they can. With the right people to coach and play with, they can be a fantastic experience. Anyways, I hope that you have learned something from this episode, and that you can spare some time in the future to go outside and play some sports :) -Kaylen Music: wish of being with you by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeen Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

  • Ep 9.2: A Look Back at Elementary School

31 AUG 2019 · My "friend" (aka nemesis) Clare and I continue our reminiscing on elementary school memories, this time from 4th to 5th grade, which is when we finally meet. In this episode, we cover the struggle to quell an epic fail of a math quiz, stabbing a kid with a paint brush, the perils of double dutch, playing instruments, and other things. Childhood memories will never fail to make me cringe and cry laughing. I feel like I was such a different person- back then I stayed up until midnight on my tenth birthday as a special treat. Now I stay up past midnight for no good reason. What a time that was. Hope you all enjoy listening to Clare and me exposing free blackmail for ourselves. It was a lot of fun :) -Kaylen Music: Subtle Break by Ghostrifter Official | https://soundcloud.com/ghostrifter-official Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

Originally set to represent teenagers in media, this podcast has become a mix between sharing teenage voices (literally) and educating people about topics that are important to others. I cover whatever topic that catches my interest, including interviews about religion, a book review on school-mandated literature, and a Would You Rather I thought about for a full year before finally asking some people.

I'm happy that I get to work on this podcast, and I hope you enjoy it.
