The Vittoriale degli Italiani is the last resting place of the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio who, after the Impresa di Fiume, chose to retire to Lake Garda. Here, with the help of architect Gian Carlo Maroni, he created his 'book of living stones' in memory of his inimitable life as a poet-soldier and the exploits of the Italians during the First World War, leaving it as a donation to the Italian people.
