  • 734: Magifest 2023 - Day One Report

27 JAN 2023 · Thursday 26th January 2023 5:00pm - 8:00pmDealer’s Room Open5:30pm - 6:30pmCharles Greene Historical Lecture. Presenting his groundbreaking research on one of magic’s most elusive figures, Charles Greene will recount the unusual life story behind Ionia. Ionia was a pioneering figure in the world of magic—all the more difficult in her era because of great biases against female performers. She astounded the world and then…disappeared from public view. Greene has uncovered what happened, and how she lived the remainder of her life. This talk will feature many of the astounding visuals we associate with Ionia, including several newly uncovered images. 7:00pm - 7.45pmMichel Huot Lecture The creator of the hit trick “Socks” is making his Magifest debut with a lecture packed with unusual, non-card parlor material. Mr. Huot comes from Quebec, and he will astound people with his unique, creative brand of magic. 8:00pm - 9pmMark James Show Straight from a successful tour of the UK, Mark James has a truly “parlor” magic show–a rarity in these times. You’ll be amazed and delighted by his high energy approach to the classics, and you’ll be amazed by the clever twists along the way. 9:00pm - 9:45pmYouth Program Welcome Event We invite all young magicians (and guardians) to attend this welcome party. You’ll meet our directors, a couple of our headline performers, and get insider tips on how to make the most of Magifest as a young person. There may even be a surprise or two… 9:30pm - 11:00pmPeter Turner Show and Lecture Hailing from the UK, Peter Turner is a radical, disruptive performer and thinker who has taken the mindreading community by storm. He will perform and then speak on his powerful, unique approach to mentalism. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793826152-K7HAURUW95AYA5ZN8UZV/IMG_0544.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793821113-NC0PIWY2G4JJS5U4WROT/IMG_0547.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793835450-TGWISHT2RAWIKIEEB475/IMG_0548.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793844354-2ZW8AP9IBQSL0JVIGN29/IMG_0553.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793923795-STO79NGBUE8FG02N8ZP1/IMG_0556.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793930676-RD483J65U2SBDHQVGAML/IMG_0557.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793939230-RMT4V6859YGJNZ66I3R9/IMG_0560.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793963841-XSC49DGK81XVLLY4HPGL/IMG_0572.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793972978-TV1AZOJH4GEUTBF45LHE/IMG_0574.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793980540-O8IQ66GJQZML4QRXL8RY/IMG_0578.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793990698-RSP6LI39CQCOHG4BVWWQ/IMG_0583.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1674793995262-YQFXWKQ4OB9M1KMOXGFB/IMG_0588.jpg Time stamps for this episode: 00:00:18 - Early morning departure from Houston to Columbus. • 733: Jeanette Andrews - For Art's Sake

19 JAN 2023 · How does one explain art? Art means something to each beholder. Art is an experience unique to each of us. What some like, others may not like, or just be lukewarm to the concept. Such is the experience of our audiences. Some like what we do while others may not. In some cases they may not even understand what we are trying to communicate. But for the most part, most magicians don’t have a message or concept they are trying to get across to their audiences. Moreover, most of us just try to “entertain” with our magic without thinking of what deeper messages we could be exploring or displaying. Our guest this week, Jeanette Andrews, is what I would call a true “artist” in the sense that she thinks deeply about the aesthetics of her props and the message she wants them to convey. More than just the visual of the staging, she also gives attention and importance to the accompanying music selections. She has also tapped into a heretofore rather unexplored target market of art patrons of museums and galleries. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463882873-T9C4GH2SLEBB4TJ2YPAP/Jeanette+black+and+white+1.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463887853-VK0LUTI7G4ZK5OQLOKDP/bending+wine+glass.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463895300-EYGNMW78FOM9ZVG82LHH/brandy+glass.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463902452-RZJHHPGC78FZWZOFX1CS/Gypsy+Thread.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463909026-3IWSE7JEM6QLAG5XRISQ/artists+rendering.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463912682-QNS02DT030JM2MF8VMOB/from+YouTube.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673463922366-5U50YSLYK91LQ1UBDZ6Z/thetrick-deceit-teaser.jpg In her early years in Chicago, Jeanette was heavily influenced by her mentor, Eugene Burger. She tells about some of the great advice he taught her and how it influenced her act and career and even her lifestyle. She also discusses her act and how she incorporates art into her act. Her act is more like looking at art in galleries as she creates striking poses and slowly displays each piece she touches and incorporates into her show. • 732: Mac King and Joel Hodgson - Comedy Giants

12 JAN 2023 · Lightning in a bottle. I don’t know how else to describe what we experienced in this week’s episode. While at Abbott’s Get Together in Colon, Michigan, this past year we sat down for a chat with the dual winners of the Senator Crandall Comedy Award, Mac King and Joel Hodgson. All of you know Mac King as the longest running comedy headliner in Las Vegas. And many of you might know Joel Hodgson as the creator of “Mystery Science Theater” TV show, but fewer of you might remember him as a comedy magic performer having appeared on Saturday Night Live among many other television appearances. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673287098942-IXLQJGG5PH1U6TJ4T7QH/IMG_0908.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673287106030-FRR3V0NY2SFQXBHTF3XQ/IMG_0906.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511941967-GHZXELSWT91YERFZG4RO/co+winners+of+Senator+Crandall+Comedy+Award.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673287210663-RKU8A3LT9Y3VSENSYD1P/IMG_0907.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1673287225563-UB88R4E4YN7LUXBE5WI8/IMG_0909.JPG https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511081472-ZYVHRYZL6AOA7C253LCT/Joel+Hodgson.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511356354-0BLJLASTKQIZ80S4HJH6/Joel+Hodgson+3.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511493199-AQ4Z81J4XGLJRMY8WD43/Joel+Hodgson+5.png https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511414483-NTHI7IA3JTQ6OXJMY8EW/Joel+Hodgson+4.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511620712-98HRX1Y39EBP94OBFFS6/Mac+King+with+braces.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511654553-Z8ZV72PQ0FCFT64VAONX/King+of+the+Castle.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511695766-J19DJ0XSJGPUWV5RAGCL/Mac+with+goldfish.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511806365-DK6VVOH04W5AMRXL9BR0/Mac+getting+dressed.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1672511810564-XP4A1W0G1KD8YL779RY8/Mac+as+Viking.jpg Mac and Joel split the Sen. Crandall Comedy Award at the 1989 Abbott’s Get Together so it was funny (no pun intended) that it happened again in 2022. There career paths began as comedy magicians but both took dramatically different directions with their careers, Mac going to Las Vegas and Joel pursuing television. In this week’s episode they reflect on their humble beginnings in the early days of comedy clubs and how they developed their talents that led to their separate and successful careers. There is a lot of talent and advice packed into this episode. • 729: David Goldrake - When His World Collapsed

22 DEC 2022 · On October 15, 2015 during a rehearsal overseas, David Goldrake’s double levitation illusion went horribly wrong. After his (now) ex-wife, Abbey, had levitated into the air, David then “floated” up behind her then suddenly he saw the floor rapidly moving toward his face. In this episode and seven years after this accident, David feels a bit more comfortable talking about this life-changing moment, the things that led up to it, and suggestions to illusionists on how to be prepared and take necessary precautions. We recorded this episode while in Atlanta, Georgia and attending the I.B.M. National convention this past summer. With so much other content that has been recorded and some that were broadcast due to their timely nature, our chat is a little late getting out, but the content and stories are timeless. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1670277298924-QDZXKZWI7JPW8612NC4H/Abbey+and+David+1.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1670277302989-D8JPEGFRZB4KQ2IG2ARH/Abbey+Goldrake.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1670277310591-84EIZV9C72QQ3CBKVJ73/David-Goldrake+head+shot.jpg https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/514e3e26e4b023ca28fd5cc8/1670277326114-J3PHCNXNV2PU3TA2E8RG/David-Goldrake+promo+1.jpg As we begin our chat, we talk about “video mapping.” David Goldrake was one of the first illusionists in Las Vegas to make use of “video mapping” which is in common use today. We chat about this before going into the story behind the tragic accident. David is quite frank and open about all the details including what happened, why it happened, the insurance for hospital bills, plus suggestions to others on why it is important to check your gear before a show and even rehearsals. David wanted to set the record straight because Joshua Jay reported Abbey’s point of view in his book, “How Magicians Think: Misdirection, Deception, and Why Magic Matters.” The story told in this podcast might be an alternate view of the accident and what followed. • 728: Behind the Camera at Masters of Illusion Season 9 - Part Two

15 DEC 2022 · It takes a village to produce a successful television series, and the village that produces “Masters of Illusion” has been successful year after year as they go into their ninth season on the CW Network. Last week we released the first of this two part series which gives listeners a peek into the lives of some of those who were involved in the making of this year’s series. We continue this week as we complete the episodic series with more conversations and more insight. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize This week we start the episode featuring a chat back stage with the emcee of MOI, none other than television’s Superman, Dean Cain. Then we hear from Lucy Darling (in full character, of course) as well as visiting the dressing room of “the Conjurors” from the U.K., Matthew Pomeroy and Natasha Lamb. We hear from one of the few mentalists on the show, Wayne Hoffman, then we sit down for a bite to eat with Jonathan Levit. One of the unexpected pleasures I experienced was gettiig to consult with one of the performers, Mai Wynn as I taught her a few close-up and stand-up routines to use on the show. We wrap this two part episode with a visit with the Executive Producer, Gay Blackstone, who finally took a breather after the two week shoot to talk about this year’s experience. • 727: Behind the Camera at Masters of Illusion Season 9 - Part One

8 DEC 2022 · A lot goes into the production of a television show, especially where magic is involved. Producing a show with one magician is hard enough, but imagine coordinating the schedules of dozens of magicians from around the world to produce a multi-week series plus a Christmas special! Gay Blackstone is the Executive Producer of “Masters of Illusion” television series which airs in the U.S. on the CS network. This coming season number 9 will kick off with the Christmas Special airing Wednesday December 14th. The actual series won’t begin airing until February 2023. The Magic Word Podcast had exclusive, behind the scenes and behind the camera access to the filming of Season 9. This week and next we will broadcast conversations with some of those that made this show happen. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize As we take our “magic carpet” to Burbank, California, we are excited about the unknown adventures that lie ahead for the filming of this year’s “Masters of Illusion” TV show. This week we chat with a variety of people behind the scenes beginning with a few people in the audience. Ever wonder where these audience members and volunteers come from? That is answered this along with our chats with some of the performers back stage, in the hallways and in their dressing rooms. • 726: Santa's Holiday Book Suggestions

1 DEC 2022 · It is the holiday gift giving season and Santa has three suggestions for every parent, grand parent, aunt, uncle or for that matter, for anyone having a young person in their lives. Santa chats with three authors about their books that are directed at children. Amy Kimlat (yes, the wife of Kostya Kimlat) tells us about her recently released book, “Hocus Pocus Practice Focus” which is a wonderful book (for readers 4-8) that will empower and inspire children to focus and do their best in life. More than a book about a child who learns magic, but the “magic” that is behind learning. Next we have Allan Kronzek who released the book, “Grandpa Magic” nearly two years ago, it is still a relevant guide for older magicians to be ready with a quick trick to entertain children. And finally, what would December be without a visit with Murray Sawchuck? His book, “At Nighttime We Are All The Same Size” was just released and it is an adorable book for animal lovers and children. Not specifically a magic book, it is about the magic in the eyes of the animals we see in our homes and at the zoo. A delightful read for ages 4-8 years of age. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Amy Kimlat was thankful to the Magic Word Podcast for offering her this platform to promote her new book. In return, she is giving all of the listeners a special offer. If you visit her website, then you can download a FREE PDF copy of “Hocus Pocus Practice Focus.” She is offering this with the hope that 1) listeners who download the book will give her a five star rating on Amazon in order to help sell more books. And 2) you will order a hard copy (or more) for the child (or children) in your life. • 725: David Ginn - King of the Kid Shows

17 NOV 2022 · With over 100 books on kid show magic, ,David Ginn stands as the King of the Kid Shows, in my opinion. He has single-handedly influenced more magicians over the decades by providing commercial, scripted routines for the children’s show entertainer than anyone can count. And when you add his DVD’s, lectures, and magazine columns, he is a rock star in our community. His routines and tricks were instrumental in the core of many of my children’s shows from birthday parties, to family shows, Scout banquets, libraries and schools and many of his routines and ideas applied to and influenced some routines in my adult shows. I would go further to say that any magician with a magic library and who has ever performed for kids probably has one or more of David’s books in their libraries. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize This week David Ginn talks about some of his experiences over the years plus his relationships with J.B. Bobo and with Doug Henning. He also encourages everyone who is interested in learning free magic routines and watching him in action on video, to surf over to his website at https://ginnmagicshop.com where you can view and learn and get lots of tips for FREE. 10 NOV 2022 · Dr. Larry Hass is the Dean of Jeff McBride’s “Magic and Mystery School” in Las Vegas. Successor to the late Eugene Burger, Dr. Hass carries on the tradition and instruction in his own style, but with definite and apparent influence by Eugene. In fact, Larry was in secret collaboration with Eugene on his last two books that were not to be released until after his death. Those two books are now available and stand as testaments to the brilliant mind of Eugene Burger. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize In this episode, Dr. Hass talks about his journey to be on the faculty, then Associate Dean to finally becoming the Dean of the School.
