The Ink That Molds Us

  • Don Quixote/Big Fish: What We Become

14 APR 2019 · Although as children we knew what we wanted to be when we grew up, many of us find it a bit harder now to be guided by that same confidence. Big Fish by Daniel Wallace and Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes teach us about the stories we tell others about who we are, but also the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, and how each narrative we tell influences who we become. Perhaps we are closer to them then we think. In this episode we dive into Howard Pyle's Robin hood and a childhood favorite of mine, Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. Together, these stories tell us what true heroes look like. “And I remembered. I would not be the person I am without the authors who made me what I am- the special ones, the wise ones, sometimes just the ones who got there first. It's not irrelevant, those moments of connection, those places where fiction saves your life. It's the most important thing there is.”
― Neil Gaiman
