The Good Night's Sleep Project

  • Reconnecting with Our Natural Sleep Rhythm: Dr. Mehrdad Razavi and Sleep Motivation

17 MAR 2020 · Medical Director of Innovative Sleep Centers, Dr. Razavi is considered a visionary in the field of sleep medicine. He offers listeners inspiration and an understanding of how sleep should and can function as a partnership, explanations for how necessary and pervasive sleep is in living organisms, even plants, and ways to prioritize and realign ourselves to this ancient need and rhythm of sleep. Dr. Mehrdad Razavi is a sleep medicine specialist and is board-certified by the American Board of Psychology, Neurology, and Sleep Medicine. He explains that his interest in the field began by noting the impact of good sleep practices on health. Furthermore, the basic tenants of sleep medicine, as a straightforward practice with high health impacts and low invasive procedures, felt in alignment with his sensibilities.  As he began studying and practicing as a sleep medicine specialist, he understood how important our natural rhythm and needs should stay tune with nature's prescription of light. As we modernize more and more, we move further from that natural light clock and fill ourselves with artificial lights, noise, and activity that work against this. He notes that often that pull for technology right before sleep is a type of addiction, a way to fill emptiness.  At his centers, he uses his experience as a sleep medicine specialist to emphasize a return to partnership with our own sleep. He explains some of the purposes of sleep, such as a means of purifying ourselves. He describes the phases of sleep that offer physical regeneration and then emotional regeneration and lists the most common sleep disorders. He discusses various ways to quiet our minds, from Tai Chi to mediations to different sleep apnea treatments. • Common Sense Approaches to Behavioral Sleep Medicine with Dr. Neal Morris

17 MAR 2020 · Dr. Neal Morris has extensive experience with treating sleep disorders and describes some general guidelines for cognitive, behavioral, and common sense treatments. He explains the different categories for sleep issues beyond the generic term of insomnia, the cognitive barriers to good sleep such as how we can falsely identify ourselves as "bad sleepers," and numerous methods to get through some of these barriers including basic common sense tools along with resources to find out more. Dr. Neal Morris is a child and family and clinical health psychologist and is board certified in behavioral sleep medicine. He runs his own practice at Dr. Neal R. Morris, Ed.D. In this discussion he explains the basics of behavioral sleep medicine to listeners, including a review of basic terms and recommendations for healthy approaches toward better sleep.  He begins with a run-down of common struggles and ways that people tell themselves that they don't need help or that they don't have a problem with sleep. By first dispelling myths and asserting that we all do indeed need 7 to 9 hours a night, he then leads into an explanation of scientifically-proven Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI).  This includes a description of issues like "stimulus control," which means if you are in bed tossing and turning, the bed is controlling what you are learning. He advises listeners how to change that stimulus message and reset the mindset that the bed is for sleeping. He also reviews the idea of sleep hygiene and how we work within our circadian rhythm. He offers numerous other suggestions as he covers why sleep is essential. If you are searching for help, he recommends looking at the lists of board-certified experts on The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and The Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. The SAMHSA site also helps by listing first-line recommended science-based approaches to various conditions including insomnia.  Dr. Morris practices in the District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia area and his practice website is http://morristherapyoffice.com/.

  • Crucial Links between Dentistry and Sleep Medicine with Dr. Jonathan Parker

17 MAR 2020 · Dr. Jonathon Parker, world-renowned dental sleep medicine expert, discusses key sleep issues. When you listen, you'll learn  how quality sleep substantively improves athletic performance, how your natural sleep rhythm is tied to hormone production and might be shifted to better match your partner's, and about the process of making a custom oral appliance and what advantages the appliances offer.  Dr. Jonathan Parker co-founded The Sleep Performance Institute along with Dr. Michael Howell almost 30 years ago. A former faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, he is currently Assistant Clinical Professor at Tufts School of Medicine in Dentistry. As one of the clinicians at The Snoring and Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment Center, he treats patients in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area. In addition, Dr. Parker has given over 200 talks, nationally and internationally, about dental sleep medicine. In this podcast he shares highlights of his knowledge with listeners, starting with research into sports medicine and sleep quality. The Sleep Performance Institute works with corporations and athletes to improve sleep performance for work functions and athletics. He recounts some interesting studies, including proof that injuries and lack of sleep are connected and an extension of sleep by one hour increased key skills in an athlete's performance. He describes the resistance of professional and college sports administrators to pick up on this information and make it a priority for their athletes and recounts efforts to overcome that resistance. Dr. Parker then addresses our circadian rhythms including the essential hormones we produce at different points in our sleep and how important both our patterns are and how individualized our sleep rhythms may be. But he also notes there are some incremental methods to realign the night owl's late night habits to better match a partner's early sleep needs.  Finally, Dr. Parker discusses the tools at our disposal for sleep medicine, dental and otherwise, from melatonin to CPAP machines to oral appliances. He talks about the success rates, the processes, the difference and correlation between snoring and sleep apnea, and when it makes sense to pursue a sleep study.  For more, see the web pages for The Sleep Performance Institute and The Snoring and Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment Center.
