  • Janay Gouveia – From Competitive Cultures to Community-Based Innovation

    9 OCT 2023 · With us today, we have Janay Gouveia! Janay is the Director of Learning Innovation at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. She is a creative, supportive, and motivated education professional with expertise drawing from international education, research and program management. Janay is passionate about innovation in education and learning across borders. Her interests and skills include student services, curriculum development, communications, customer service, relationship management, and evaluation and reporting – fellow self-proclaimed assessment geek like yours truly! As an experienced leader in international education skilled at developing and managing a wide range of programs and services, she is happy to share ideas and develop new programs, partnerships and opportunities – this is the exact kind of interconnected and interpersonal mindset that will help us mitigate disruptions in the sector. Janay is a strategist with a mission to support the upskilling and reskilling process with integrity and intention. With so many changes to our economic reality, Janay believes in the potential and power for new experiences to change our worldview and positively shape or re(shape) our identity.   • Will Gage – Leading Institutional Change

    25 SEP 2023 · With us today we have Dr. William Gage. Will Gage is the Associate Vice President of Teaching and Learning at York University. In this role, which he has held for almost a decade, he has championed ground-breaking approaches to teaching and learning, including the purposeful inclusion of technology in the process (eLearning), experiential education and internationalization. As he prepares to return to classroom teaching (after a well-deserved sabbatical) Will is excited to re-ignite his research in his lab at the Faculty of health around Biomechanical neuromuscular control of human movement, with a particular focus on knee and hip osteoarthritis and joint replacement surgery. He wants to explore the development of wearable technologies to gather data on how people move around with these ailments during their daily live out in the community, not just in the lab environment, so that this more comprehensive data can be used to better understand and treat these conditions. Will’s work at the systems level has involved Working with pan-university working groups and committees as they examine, reinterpret, and deepen York’s commitment to 21st Century teaching and learning, particularly in the areas of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and Indigeneity. I have been inspired by him on a daily basis and I look forward to sharing some of his wisdom with you all today. Join me in welcoming Will Gage to the Education Revolution!

  • Jorge Montoya – Building Sustainable International Partnerships

    11 SEP 2023 · With us today, we have Jorge Montoya. Jorge brings with him more than 15 years of experience as an applied education specialist. He has worked in financial services, systems design, and international project management across five continents, including partnerships and collaborations in South Korea, Vietnam, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Bhutan. His in-depth expertise in the planning and execution of change management strategies has involved the creation of comprehensive monitoring and evaluation plans and directly contributed to sustainable outcomes for international development projects around the world. As Humber College’s International Development Institute, Jorge serves as the business and operations lead for global development projects – and currently works diligently as a community advocate for education reform and development projects in Africa, Asia and South America. Jorge is a systems-thinker and innovator. He embeds technology within his projects with purpose and intention as he works in partnership with institutional administrators, government officials, teachers, and students, to decrease the barriers that so many face, to high-quality educational opportunities. Tanveer is an accomplished and innovative Instructional and Learning Designer with a strong background in Communications and Psychology, which serves her well in the design process! With a passion for educational innovation, Tanveer excels in creating engaging and impactful materials that meet the diverse needs of different learning environments, including the integration of instructional technology and multimedia tools to optimize learner engagement. Tanveer remains up-to-date with industry best practices and emerging trends in design and e-learning. She is always exploring new technologies to address instructional challenges and continuously enhances her skills through professional development opportunities – and by her own admission, journeying down the google and youtube black holes… learning on her own online! Tanveer’s incredible ability to build trust between herself and the faculty, staff, and subject matter experts she collaborates with, helps her to fosters effective working relationships that truly have the ability to impact both students and instructors in positive and powerful ways at scale! She supports and trains faculty and staff in innovative course design principles and the use of instructional technologies, empowering them to create engaging and effective learning experiences. Tanveer finds incredible ways to balance the needs of teachers, with those of learners - Supporting both, Serving both = and ultimately creating a dynamic experience for all.   • Vidur Kalive – A.I – The Good, the Bad and the Downright Dangerous?

    31 JUL 2023 · Artificial intelligence is a very hot topic around the world these days! So, I’m very excited to have today’s guest with us to talk about all the positive and potentially negative impacts of AI on education. Vidur Kalive is the Artificial Intelligence Architect at York University. He has expertise in conversational AI and is working on projects aimed at using AI and Machine Learning to improve student experience and curriculum delivery at the university, including SAVY, York University’s award-winning AI Student Virtual Assistant. Vidur has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business. He has over five years of experience working in the higher education sector. In his previous role, Vidur worked with Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, where among other things, he helped develop Deakin’s AI student virtual assistant using IBM Watson, which at the time was the first implementation of its kind anywhere in the world.   • Laura Wood - Getting Comfortable in Discomfort

    17 JUL 2023 · With us today, we have Laura Wood. With over 20 years of experience in the field of education, Laura is passionate about all things international. She was educated at Queen's University in Canada and Cambridge in the UK, she has also lived in France, worked in Germany, conducted research in Australia, taught in South Africa and worked for the Directorate General for Education and Culture at the European Commission in Belgium. Now based in Canada, Laura has held roles as the Director of the International Programs and Services Office at the Rotman School of Management out of the University of Toronto, worked at Mitacs, a nonprofit national research organization related to industrial and social innovation. and is now the Director of Student Community and Engagement at Centennial College. Through her travels and experience working with different people in unfamiliar places, Laura has become comfortable in discomfort, calm in the face of uncertainty, traits that we can all stand to talk more about and learn from given today’s rapidly changing contexts. Her exceptional work in education seeks to leverage technology to help students better experience, better feel and reflect, on the difficult situations and circumstances felt during the complex process of migration.   • Patrick Thibaudeau - The Truth About Technology

    19 JUN 2023 · With us today, we have Patrick Thibaudeau, Patrick is the Director of IT Innovation and Academic Technologies at York University. He has held this central role in the University’s Information Technology department for over 8 years and for 17 years before that, he held a similar role at the University of Alberta. Patrick is an E-Learning expert, focusing on the integration of technology with purpose and intention within educational environments. His particular specialty is Moodle, an open-sourced learning management system that he is able to code-out and personalize for York’s particular student and instructor needs. Patrick’s diverse background includes time spent performing in both the dramatic and musical arts – giving him a unique perspective and open mind, that allows him to envision creative solutions and participate in the often unpredictable process of innovation.

  • Patricia Mangeol - Education as a Lever for Social Change

    5 JUN 2023 · With us today, we have Patricia Mangeol, Patricia is an education policy specialist with 15 years of experience in the government of Ontario and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), there she acted as lead analyst conducting research and developing policy recommendations to improve higher education and skills systems in countries including Hungary, Portugal, the Slovak Republic and the United States. She currently works as Director of Digital Learning Initiatives at Sandbox, a Toronto-based digital media and technology agency with a focus on innovative approaches to digital learning, where Patricia brings her expertise and international outlook to research and development projects. https://www.sandboxinc.ca/
