  • #013 - Breakfast Bites - TEIVOVO Rugby - 11-06-2022

10 JUN 2022 · Bula and welcome to TeivovoRugby.com – “Breakafast Bites” – a wrap of daily sports highlights for Saturday 11 June 2022! · No matter what the sport, wily old coaches always say that great D wins games, and so it proved last night with the Crusaders putting in a BIG day at the office, clocking up a new Super Rugby record of 250 tackles to hold out the hard-charging Chiefs 20-6 in freezing, wet conditions in Christchurch. And so today up in sunny Auckland at a predicted 14 degrees Celsius, we tip the Blues to dismantle the Brumbies to advance to the Super Rugby Pacific final next week. · With 19 All Blacks playing in Christchurch last night and more today, the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals are great trials for the first All Blacks squad to be named on Monday. The Crusaders could provide the bulk of the All Blacks, but the challenge for Head Coach Ian Foster and his selectors is whether to select a champion team, or a team of stars. · In the NRL, Already without ORIGIN forwards Jeremiah Nanai and Reuben Cotter, the Cowboys lost star forward, Heilum Luki early in the first half, but they barely missed a beat, with superstar Jason Taumalolo and Hooker Reece Robson leading the way to a 31-12 win against St George Dragons in Townsville last night. · In football, England plays Italy in the Nations League with only 3,000 fans allowed to watch; punishment for all the crowd trouble before the Euro 2020 final when fans without tickets forced their way through security gates into Wembley stadium. England Manager Gareth Southgate says the punishment is embarrassing for the country. In boxing, Three-weight world champion, Naoya Inoue is the first Japanese boxer to be crowned “World Pound-for-Pound King”. Unbeaten at 23-0, with 20 wins by Knockout. Inoue is the reigning undisputed WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring Bantamweight World Champion. Finally in money matters, Forbes estimates that the 46-year-old Tiger Woods has now joined LeBron James and Michael Jordan as the third athlete in history to reach billionaire status based on his golf winnings, endorsements and other business ventures over the years. Nowadays less than 10% of Tiger’s net worth and career earnings originate from the golf course. The vast majority of his wealth is generated from lucrative endorsement deals with various brands including Nike, Gatorade, Rolex and TaylorMade. Sounds like stuff I wear Gatorade and Taylormade!!! • #012 - Breakfast Bites - TEIVOVO Rugby - 10-06-2022

9 JUN 2022 · Bula and welcome to TeivovoRugby.com – “Breakafast Bites” – a wrap of the daily sports news for Friday 10 June 2022! Watch out for the flying Sevu Reece in the first Super Rugby Pacific semifinal at 7.05pm tonight, and especially keep an eye out for the key match-up between Brodie Retalick and the Crusaders Captain Scott Barrett. The aging Chiefs warrior is in the fight of his life against the young gun and tallest Barrett Bro, to see who will partner Sam Whitelock in the All Blacks this international season. As they say in rugby league – money talks and right now the NRL is flush with cash! Every State of Origin player in ORIGIN I on Wednesday made A$30,000 match allowance just for making the game-day 17. And for all the players NOT in the State of Origin series, the NRL announced a boost in their Club’s salary cap from the current A$10Million ceiling to $10.5M next season, with an annual increase of A$100,000 each subsequent year during the next broadcast cycle. Sad news in boxing, the South African boxer who became disoriented during a fight and threw punches in the direction of an empty corner has died. You may have seen the video of Simiso Buthelezi on Youtube, well he passed away yesterday after being induced into a coma following the fight on 5 June in Durban. He was 24 years old. RIP bro. Finally today, Tiger Woods turned down nearly US$1Billion to join the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, CEO Greg Norman told The Washington Post. The first LIV Invitational tournament teed off in London yesterday with US$25Million in prize money of which US$4M goes to the winner. For their troubles, all 17 PGA-ranked players who entered this tournament – including Phil Mickleson and Sergio Garcia, have been suspended by the US PGA, who see the Saudi-backed tour as a big threat. Geez and I thought golf was a gentlemen’s game! For TeivovoRugby.com – I’m Culden Kamea. Malo, vina’a and thank you! • #011 - Breakfast Bites - TEIVOVO Rugby - 09-06-2022

8 JUN 2022 · Bula and welcome to TeivovoRugby.com – “Breakfast Bites” – a wrap of the daily sports news! Queensland turned the tables on the NSW Blues in ORIGIN I in front of 90,000 screaming fans at Accor Stadium in Sydney last night, grinding out a 16-10 win with Man of the Match – who else - Cameron Munster! In boxing, World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury bought two brand new Rolls-Royce cars yesterday at a bargain F$1.2Million each. The Gypsy King owns two other Rolls - so four in total now, a classic Mini Cooper, a Range Rover, a couple of Ferrari’s and a Volkswagen. Don’t throw away your old jersey Hector! Wayne Gretzky won the 1988 Stanley Cup – er that’s in ice hockey, in his final game for the Edmonton Oilers. So last weekend, his jersey from that final sold for US$1.5Million at auction, becoming the most expensive hockey jersey of all time. Harry Kane's goal against Germany on Tuesday night was his 50th goal for England, now just three behind Wayne Rooney's record. It took Cristiano Ronaldo 114 games to score 50 goals for Portugal and Lionel Messi scored 50 in 107 games for Argentina. Kane has got his in just 71 games. And to wrap this morning’s first ever breakfast bite: Sepp Blatter – remember him? The fraud trial of the former-FIFA President was held up again after the 86 year old Blatter complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties. Swiss prosecutors allege a 2011 FIFA payment of US$2.2Million authorised by Blatter to Michel Platini, ex-UEFA President was unlawful. Get this, Blatter and Platini say it was a late payment for advisory work by Platini for the then FIFA President, done 13 years earlier in 1998. Sorry, but these two are crooks! 28 APR 2022 · Our Lakeba Rugby Club was established in December 2021 and we were able to get Simeli Limbau , he's a level two world rugby trainer certified and also Ro Ceravata who's a level three world rugby coach certified and he's also a world rugby educator .   That's you know something big for us is about to get a coach of his magnitude to come and coach us at grassroots. The numbers, we're around 50 registered players and a majority are from Lakeba, Lau  and like a sprinkle of Tailevu. #TEIVOVOFijiRugbyShow #TeivovoRugby #TeivovoDigital #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #Raka #team #rugbytraining #sports #FRU #Fiji --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teivovo-rugby/message

  • #009 - Eastern Saints Rugby Club – Seremaia Bai #ROOTSRAKA S01E09

22 APR 2022 · In this short ROOTS RAKA interview we interview Seremaia Bai (former Flying Fijian) about his Rugby Academy Fiji for girls with the club, Eastern Saints Rugby Club. Bula my name is Sermaia Bai. At my back is it's a girl's program with Eastern Saints Rugby Club.   The club is around two and a half to three years old club this is a new program for our girls our daughters that eager and want to try out with the rugby. So they just started probably a month ago, you know the interest from the girls is amazing, I think probably got to do with the power women's sevens team in the world in the Olympics and Credit to them. Most of the girls, or probably 90 percent of our girls, they never played you know they just want to come and try out and you see it's fun and the the tournament has been great we are increasing at time we we reach up to 60 girls. Probably it's just probably the environment we're trying to set we feel all girls are welcome We have sets of rules that we need to follow in order for everybody to participate equally this girl's program.  It's the you know it's catered from under 14 and the 16 and 18 under open. So different Schools different ages different background some come all the way from Nausori . You know different different some some probably don't you know stay in school anymore. But we welcome them for us is about setting an environment where you know kids or girls can come in. And something they can you know make friends and you know have a bit of fun and and be active at the same time . I do have a daughter and i know what it means to have rugby for their life because it creates an opportunity for her to get a scholarship overseas. It's just a safe space where they can just come and have fun and then on top of that we're just trying to improve their skill set and the knowledge of the game. So it's kind of a beginning program for all our girls you know you're hiring the ground trying to get the equipment and the girls they come from some are facing trouble with getting a bus fare to get here you know we're trying to cater for getting some juice afterwards and some things to to for them to eat since they have to go back to their home after school hours. Those are probably the the challenges for us we are facing. Listen to full episode for this great initiative and how you can help. #TEIVOVOFijiRugbyShow #TeivovoRugby #TeivovoDigital #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #Raka #team #rugbytraining #sports #FRU #Fiji --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teivovo-rugby/message

  • #008 - Those Ticket Prices Again... - why are Fijian Drua vs Highlanders match tickets so expensive? S01E08

19 APR 2022 · In this Podcast, Culden Kamea asks why ticket prices to the Super Rugby Pacific game between the Fijian Drua and the Highlanders are so high? I know that I have spoken about this in an earlier podcast, but after flicking TV channels between the HSBC Singapore 7s and another channel featuring the Fijian Drua interim CEO Brian Thorburn last night, I’ve got even more questions to ask about the very high ticket prices. Look don’t get me wrong, I’m a certified rugby nut for sure, and watching live rugby games featuring top Fiji teams in 7s or XVs is my passion and something I have been reporting, commentating on and podcasting now for decades – maybe I’m just another old fart? Anyway, what got up my nose was, how powerful, arrogant or cheeky is this interim CEO that he can repeat his threat reported in the Fiji Sun last week that if we locals don’t start buying tickets to the Fijian Drua versus Highlanders game on 30th April then he will delay the TV broadcasting of the game by two hours – can he really do that? What about the local TV company that holds the free-to-air live broadcast rights – MaiTV? What about the local TV company that holds the live pay-per-view rights – Digicel? What about all us SKY subscribers who have paid to watch this game and others live? What about the rest of our country – will they all suffer a two hour delayed broadcast just because the interim CEO of the Fijian Drua says so? While the interim-CEO was making this threat in a Fiji flag-blue Fijian Drua Bula shirt with a big Bula smile- (like a true blue Aussie tourist I thought), he emphasized that we locals need to change our ways and don’t leave things to the last minute, but buy our tickets to the game early because we cannot have only 5000 or 10,000 people there, we needed to show the world a full house! The interim-Fijian Drua CEO further said that these ticket prices - $30 for Adults on the grass embankment, $75 for the cement embankment and between $150 and $185 for the grandstand were lower than the ticket prices for Super Rugby Pacific games in 2019 and 2020. H E L L O er we have had a minor hiccup with a pandemic sweep through our country since then, killing over a thousand people, causing tens of thousands to lose their jobs and smashing our economy for six! What he is so conveniently goose-stepping better than David Campese is that ticket prices for all the other Super Rugby Pacific games in Australia and New Zealand are no more than $30 for grandstand seats – so why $75 to $185 here in Fiji. Finally, the interim Fijian Drua CEO Brian Thorburn also admitted (what is so clear to see on TV) that in all their “home games” in Australia so far this season, they had only sold 1200 tickets! That’s right, only 1200 tickets sold so far in 3 home games in Australia at F$40 say and he wants us locals here in Fiji, to rush out and buy 10,000 tickets @ F$75 - $185 or he’ll block the TV broadcast? No thanks, as we always do in Suva – check the weather on the day and then maybe if it’s not going to rain, just maybe we’ll buy a ticket to that game last minute- we’re not stupid. Ok so there I am switching back to the HSBC Singapore 7s and you know what the honest to goodness truth really is interim CEO, when you take all the emotions out of us supporting the Fijian Drua with our heart and soul – they really aren’t that good and what’s more they’re not getting any better! Our Fiji 7s team in Singapore – now that’s how you get excited about supporting a team and buying tickets! For the TeivovoRugby.com Podcast – I’m Culden Kamea.
