  • HEART in the Midst of Unprecedented Times with Pastor Phil

4 MAY 2021 · For over 20 years, Vickie Winkler has served HEART as its Founder and Executive Director. In 2020, she strongly felt God’s leading to begin a process of transition to find her replacement in 2021. In this podcast, Vickie invites Pastor Phil Sparling, who serves as both HEART’s U.S. Board Chairman and Vickie’s personal pastor from Auburn, CA. Sparling was invited by Vickie to visit Kenya and spend time with the Kenyan staff to help them prepare and navigate through a huge change that will take HEART from a founder-lead ministry to a board-lead ministry. Sparling’s topic, “HEART Ministry in the Midst of Unprecedented Times,” is a conversation that includes many personal reflections, as well as clips from Pastor Phil’s transition training workshop at HEART Lodge in Nairobi in April 2021. In his experience with previous boards, Sparling has helped provide leadership to various ministry transitions over the years. He brings a wealth of knowledge and sees transition significantly influenced by dynamics of individual commitment to Leadership, Mission, and Benefits, or some variation of all three. Good listening with lots of wisdom to impart! https://africaheart.com/

  • Vickie Winkler and Jerry Kitchel talk to people who get things done!

9 FEB 2021 · It is not uncommon to look at huge challenges and wonder how you can make a difference. For Patricia Werner and her husband, Steve, the thought of adolescent girls missing out on an education in Kenya because of a monthly cycle was too hard to bear. That’s when Patricia decided to do something about it by asking friends and family—and just about anyone who would listen-- to contribute to an amazing, life-changing cause. Patricia says a year’s supply of sanitary napkins for a school-age girl costs about as much as a special beverage at Starbucks! In this fascinating interview, you’ll meet this special couple who have become widely known as “yes people,” a label they proudly wear. It’s a label they’ve earned because they find it nearly impossible to tell anyone in need “no.” This podcast with Vickie Winkler, Jerry Kitchel, and the Werners is sure to inspire and perhaps even stretch your capacity to serve others with Christ-like compassion. https://africaheart.com/what-we-do/freedom-for-girls/

  • Vickie Winkler discusses the very delicate topic of young girls and menstruation in Kenya.

In this podcast, Vickie tells the compelling story about Freedom for Girl’s launch in 2008 and defining moments when God brought people and organizations together to empower Kenya’s ‘girl-child’ with over 20,000 annual provisions of hygiene kits to adolescent schoolgirls. Straight from the HEART brings you stories and accomplishments about the work of H.E.A.R.T., Health Education for Africa Resource Team.
These stories tell of mothers, children, and communities that have been transformed by this ministry over the past 20 years. For Vickie and her team of HEART staff members, volunteers, and supporters, it is only because of God's unlimited provision of strength, resources, and favor that so much good has been accomplished in the lives of Kenyan people. As Vickie often remarks, "God is our CEO and I am just the executive director!"
Hosted by Vickie Winkler, the founder and Executive Director of Africa HEART Ministries and HEART's Partner Relations Specialist Jerry Kitchel.

Vickie has long embraced the guiding wisdom of Hosea 4:6. 'My people perish for lack of knowledge'. It was this scriptural truth that fueled her desire to launch a focused and strategic program aimed at meeting the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of HIV positive mothers. "If we can work to restore a mother's health and empower her with strong faith, valuable knowledge, and revenue-producing skills, then we can also work to keep her children in school and on a trajectory that will enable the next generation to flourish as well."
