1 MAY 2024 · Tennessee passed a bill Monday that will allow religious parents who hold anti-LGBTQ beliefs to adopt and foster LGBTQ children. The bill, Senate Bill 1738, passed 73-20. The bill will prohibit the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) from requiring prospective or current adoptive and foster parents to agree with government policy regarding “sexual orientation or gender identity” that conflicts with their own beliefs. 4 APR 2024 · Transgender Day of Visibility has been celebrated since March 31 2009, when the holiday was created. Every year since becoming president, Biden has issued a proclamation around the observance on that date. It was a coincidence in 2024 that the day corresponded with Easter Sunday, which falls on a different date each year. Religious Conservatives are saying that Biden chose March 31 for Transgender Day of Visibility as an affront to Christians. Many Christians oppose greater recognition of trans people and took offense at the two days being paired, even though it was only a byproduct of the calendar. 30 MAR 2024 · Black transgender woman Ashia "Asia" Davis was found dead June 2 in a hotel room in Highland Park, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, and police are investigating her death as a homicide. She is at least the 12th trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming person to have died by violence in the U.S. this year. Davis was found at the Woodward Inn, The Detroit News reports. The Michigan State Police have released surveillance video of a man walking and running in the hotel’s parking lot, and they say he may be a suspect. Carlos Lamar Scotland, 18, was arraigned Friday in Highland Park District Court on a charge of the first degree murder and felony firearm in connection with Davis' fatal shooting. However, she was recently fired from her job due to an anonymous parent who complained about her music career. Brown had been successfully teaching for seven years while pursuing a master’s degree and aiming for her doctorate. In October, an anonymous parent made a complaint about the music she released under her rap name “Drippin Honey.” The complaint resulted in five months of meetings with the school where she had to defend her music career.
