  • IINTERVIEW: Kevin Murray on Virtual Learning

5 APR 2020 · March of 2020 marked the beginning of an abrupt need to design and implement Virtual Learning at Casco Bay High School where I teach. Jonne Trees, the Boothbay, Maine Region TV manager interviewed me a week after we began Virtual Learning and our follow up conversation, which serves as an intro, was recorded two weeks into the COVID-19 teaching. The lesson I mention is not as polished as I had hoped. Imagine if writers' rooms and IT staff for public school teaching was as demanded and funded as TV, movies, and entertainment. If you are a parent or teacher, please contact me for more material and support. In the meantime, remember that people are capable of great things, this to will pass and the one thing people will always learn is your degree of confidence, hope and loving-kindness. These are the enduring lessons for us all!

  • Things I say - Responsibility

10 MAR 2020 · This one cut/live recording details my learning to see the act of responsibility in a more helpful and positive light. One young listener said this podcast is, "like two hours of nothing". This is high praise because it's super important to slow down and, with sobriety, do nothing. Maybe for you silent meditation is too much. If this recording helps you slow down, then I have done something here. One last note, in my of the digressions I go hard on corporations that make energy drinks. I forget to note that some corporations, such as B Corps hold great promise for the country and world. Peace

  • Things I Say - I Am, You Are

22 OCT 2019 · This episode may help if you are attempting to meditate or slow down. Deep thinking helps us witness the goings-on around us. Please know that you and are fools and fabulous. Our greatest work will come from even a bit of centered thinking and feeling; our tendency toward achievement and effort are helping/earning/inventing glass ceilings. Think hard but know you are more than your thinking.

  • INTERVIEW - Beryl Satter

13 AUG 2019 · In this episode my interview with Professor of American History, Beryl Satter helps if you've ever had this thought: I know racism and making money explain black urban poverty but I don't really know how it happened. In addition to being an expert on historical and current draining of black wealth in American cities, Beryl more recently co-founded the Queer Newark Oral History Project and continues to teach at Rutgers University. Finally, the Same Rock Podcast just doubled in size because Justin Anderson, a student at Columbia College Chicago studying photojournalism, has joined me and will be an ongoing Contributor. Justin is also interested in presenting pre-news, post-history or whatever we are up to! Stay tuned for more from Justin in the future.

  • Things I say - Graduates

4 JUN 2019 · I hope these comments have utility for any recent high school or college graduate or any of us up to the task of daring greatly. One of the gems of teaching at Casco Bay High School is witnessing all seniors give their Final Word. Short prepared comments on why they are ready to graduate delivered behind a podium in front of a hundred people, this ritual exemplifies what it means to build a diverse and unified community in a public secondary school. Because I happened to be a senior Advisor, I provided remarks to begin one day of this ritual that is spread across two weeks of English class for seniors. This past spring, Senior English teachers CC Robinson and Mallory Haar did the heavy lifting of coaching young writers preparing their Final Words in English classes. Perhaps this episode, a live recording of my final words to students that I knew well, may sound a bit intense but I assure I wasn't yelling at them. It was my hope to connect in the few minutes I had at their podium.

  • Things I say - Use While Running

6 MAY 2019 · Running is amazing! I know its very Forest Gump, but the benefits for body and mind are endless. This track is intended to assist a runner who is dreading the run. Hopefully, these eight minutes are a bit of an inspiration to keep on moving with more joy and contentedness than we think we have.

This podcast highlights the intersection of work, happiness, having spirit, doing service and being healthy. My interests are sculpted by twenty years serving in a near full inclusion high school as a special ed. teacher. I tend to approach things part guidance counselor, social worker, personal trainer, career coach and fellow imperfect human, learning and growing. Specifically: How do you remain hopeful in the face of this crazy world? How do you slow down and walk forward instead of spinning in annoyed and anxious circles? What can you teach me about getting smarter, kinder, and more compassionate? How can we make the honest telling of vulnerable truths as important with the news of the day?
