In this podcast, I will be discussing various ways that the “Angry Black Woman” trope is represented in different media forms. I am sure that each of you has watched at least one Tyler Perry movie in your life. In most of these movies, the central character is a black woman. Tyler Perry has done an excellent job at accurately depicting the “Angry Black Woman” trope, but various white writers want to feed off of his success and attempt to reproduce his cinematic success, producing what I like to call, “capitalized afrocentrism”. Over the years, the essence of what can bring a black woman to anger has been altered to the point that many films show the angry black woman as irrational. I want to shine light on works that highlight a black woman with a justified anger, from black creative minds.
