Proactive Self-Assessment: The Key to Managing MS Effectively

  • Proactive Self-Assessment: The Key to Managing MS Effectively

9 AUG 2020 · The episode of self-monitoring living with MS focuses on empowering individuals with Multiple Sclerosis to assess their own health using objective measures. To begin the self-assessment process, individuals need to have access to specific tools and resources. The first assessment involves a timed 8-meter walk, which requires a meter to measure the distance and a stopwatch (usually on a smartphone) to time the walk. It is recommended to ask a friend, spouse, or neighbor to time the walk to ensure accurate results. The second assessment focuses on vision and color perception. For this assessment, individuals should use a near vision card and a color vision assessment app called Eye Handbook. By using the app, individuals can easily test their vision and color perception and determine if they can see the pictures and numbers on the cards. The third assessment involves quantifying function using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Individuals can access this online by visiting the EDSS clinic speak webpage. By completing this assessment, individuals can measure their level of disability and monitor any changes over time. The fourth assessment focuses on cognitive function and involves downloading the CogEval app on an Apple device( apologies since the episode has been recording we are informed that this CogEval app is not freely available to access for patients only for HCP). The app provides a two-minute symbol and number exercise to assess cognitive abilities. Finally, the fifth assessment focuses on hand function and involves the use of a 9 Hole Peg test. Individuals can purchase a 9 Hole Peg device from clinicspeak.com or create one themselves. This test measures dexterity and hand function and is an important tool in assessing MS progression. It is important to note that individuals do not need to complete all five assessments before their clinic visit. Instead, they should choose at least three to begin with and not be too hard on themselves if they cannot complete them all. By using these objective measures, individuals can take an active role in managing their MS and make informed decisions about their health. The healthcare team looks forward to seeing patients in the MS clinic and working together to improve their health and wellbeing.
