  • Experience the Nightless Nights in Oulu

12 JUN 2017 · There was a young lady who wondered, what the time was here and why it is so bright when visiting our home at Kempele recently. She told me to write about it to my webpage of mrssantasite.com and tell it globally. So I got inspired by her. She also gave me a lot of ideas about blogging, too. You can hear a story of the brightness of the Midnight in the Northern Finland. I remembered the Midsummer Day 2016 when we did wreaths of flower, just to show young ladies that they should search for their future husband or boyfriend by having that beautiful wreath of flowers on the head and dancing naked in the field. Well, it was one night too late and just a joke because all nice traditions have gone somewhere in the old graveyards maybe because of the social media meeting apps! Anyway the groom should appear soon to the field at Midnight if we lived in the history. Our kitchen was full of flowers and full of hopes! But we did three nice wreaths of flower for us. There was a little grandson involved it the playing and a tiny dog. My husband was fishing salmon in Lapland, so I also was a lonely lady. I remembered all the photos and videos I took last summer at Midnight, that means it is a time for the Sun not going down at all and also the Traditional Finnish Midnight, ”Juhannus”. I used Windows Phone model 1520 which is not supported any more. That young lady did not tell me about the tradition of young girls looking for their future boyfriend by swimming in the flower field at midnight when the Sun doesn´t go down at all. She has namely found her husband already and has three children so it is not actual for her any more! She told me to write about our beautiful and light nights, since she lives in Helsinki where there are not so bright nights at all. Well not so bright that in Oulu area anyway! She found it so interesting! I wanted to show her the sandy sea shore at Nallikari Camping in Oulu. The picture is taken around ten o`clock at night on the eleventh of June 2017 and the Sun tried to go down but I told her it doesn´t do so even if we commanded. We put our coats to warm up because there is not so warm yet and the wind is nearly always blowing from Sweden which is just on the other side of the Bothnic Gulf. That blue and yellow country with 700 years united history together with the state of Sweden-Finland. Sometimes you recall these kind of things to matter as I drove my car smoothly towards Kempele home with my lady friend. On the motorway, happy and proud of the freedom the Finnish women have at summer night with the beautiful scenery and hundreds of birch trees with mice ears. At Nallikari Camping there were happy people welcoming the first summer days and bright nights to Oulu Area after a cold spring. Nearly-Lapland! Finally I found a rainbow in the sky above the forest at 23.57 on the 11th of June 2017. The photo was taken just before the midnight in Santamäki, Kempele, Finland. I used the iPhone 6s this time. That vast field is recently ploughed and sought by our neighbour farmer for us to enjoy, farmers´s ancestors. The whole village is always eager to see that cornfield areas growing in the summer. The ruffs and swans are resting on the fields when flowing towards Lapland. The fields of Takalahti with all the animals and birds my husband is watching so eagerly night and day. He got a new camera from his friends and was nearly too happy about it! Like the squirrel he was shooting with the new equipment. https://blogit.kaleva.fi/digiseniori/2017/06/12/waiting-for-the-dark-nights-in-finland-but-not-getting-it-for-months-just-a-nice-thing-in-oulu-area/

  • Christmas Morning in the Snow Land of Syöte, Finland

30 DEC 2016 · The story is about skiing at Christmas on the snowy Syöte area, around one of the national parks in Finland. That morning was quiet and beautiful. I left my family in the log cabin and wanted to ski alone on the roads. There are also very nice ski-tracks, hundreds of kilometers long, but that morning was not for sports! Christmas morning is for feelings and thinking in the open air and among the snow banks.

  • First impression on Oulu as a student

8 SEP 2016 · We were discussing about the first thoughts on arriving to study in Oulu. There was also Ella, who comes from Lapland. She told Chris about the cold weather in Finland. Chris wanted to know more about everyday living in Oulu and Finland. It is difficult for many international students to come to study in Oulu and Finland. There are many practical issues to be solved like transportation, food, clothes, living, money, people, finding places. The Finnish language is challenging. It is anyway very good for Finland that we take students from other countries to study here even if it will no longer be free at the universities of Finland, at least starting from the autumn term 2017. Even then there are scholarships for students!

  • Picking blueberries by The sea side of Oulu

27 JUL 2016 · - Let´s go picking blueberries (bilberries), said my husband. So we did and left for the seaside forest off the city of Oulu by car. Every Finn is taught to pick berries as a child even at school. I also was taken to the forest in my childhood home in Lappajärvi, where there also were snakes in the forest. This time here we might meet a dangerous snake, too and, for that we always wear rubberboots. We picked 13 litres European blueberries (not blackberries, as I told) by picking them with a kind of picking machine. It was blowing a lot since the forest is situated by the seaside. That´s why there were no insects when we started picking blueberries at 4 p.m in a bright summer sun. There are only ten percent of berry pickers who are Finnish nowadays. Most pickers come from Thailand. Mostly picked berries are blueberry, lingonberry and cloudberry, which grows on the swamps. Berry picking belongs to the Finnish outdoor life wich is rather appreciated among older peolpe, but also the fact berries are some kind of super food, might bring younger adults to the forests. Trekking tours to the extreme surroundings are tempting possibilities. After this four hour trip we had a proper sauna bath to ease the muscles. No pain afterwards! If ever you come to Finland, ask us as guides for your extreme trekking tour. We have a long experience in making tours to the nature. Contact info www.mrssantasite.com

  • The Finnish Education, Minister Anne Berner

11 JUN 2016 · The minister of transportation, Anne Berner, tells about the Finnish education shortly at the Center Party congress in Seinajoki. It is very common in the Nordic countries, that people can speak to politicians freely, as she just a moment before told in her speech people to do. We need good web connections for a good and equal education, which her field is promoting well.
