    3 DEC 2019 · Leonardo Vazquez, AICP/PP is a national-award winning urban planner, author and educator who specializes in community economic development, creative placemaking, culturally competent planning, leadership development and strategic communications. He is the founding Executive Director of The National Consortium for Creative Placemaking in Union, NJ. It helps grow and professionalize the emerging field of creative placemaking through leadership development, coaching and Summits. He is also Director of Creative Placemaking at New England College, where he directs the executive education Certificate in Creative Placemaking. He was a professor at Rutgers University's Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and Ohio State University's Knowlton School of Architecture. Leo was also co-founder of the American Planning Association New York Metro Chapter's Planners for Ethnic and Cultural Diversity Committee (now known as the Diversity Committee). He is the author of Leading from the Middle: Strategic Thinking for Urban Planning and Community Development Professionals and Dialogos: Placemaking in Latino Communities.     16 SEP 2019 · Justin Garrett Moore, AICP is an urban designer and the executive director of the New York City Public Design Commission. He has extensive experience in urban design and city planning—from large-scale urban systems, policies, and projects to grassroots and community-focused planning, design, and arts initiatives. At the Public Design Commission, his work is focused on prioritizing the quality and excellence of the public realm, and fostering accessibility, diversity, and inclusion in the City's public buildings, spaces, and art. As the former Senior Urban Designer for the NYC Department of City Planning for over a decade, Justin was responsible for conducting complex urban design plans and studies of the physical design and utilization of sites including infrastructure, public spaces, land use patterns, and neighborhood character. He is the co-founder of Urban Patch, a social enterprise focused on community improvement and development, and a member of the urbanist collective BlackSpace. His professional affiliations include the American Planning Association, the Urban Design Forum, the Van Alen Institute, and Next City's Vanguard. He also serves as a member of the American Planning Association's AICP Commission and on the boards of ioby.org and Made in Brownsville.

  • Derrick Lovett Interview POV

    17 JUN 2019 · Mr. Derrick Lovett is currently President/CEO at MBD Community Housing Corporation, a 501c3 multi-faceted Bronx-based community development agency, dedicated to preserving and creating affordable housing. During his seven-year tenure as President, he closed on over $250 million of MBD rehabilitation deals. Prior to MBD, Mr. Lovett was a tenured banker with over 25 years of service in the finance industry as VP at JPMorgan Chase, and Citigroup. He has vast experience in all types of commercial credits. He was responsible for the origination, underwriting, and portfolio management of all types of commercial real estate loans. Mr. Lovett managed a $500 million portfolio, and negotiated $250 million in construction and permanent financing in his last year as a banker alone. Mr. Lovett has worked extensively with almost all Federal, State, and City agencies involved in low-to- moderate and middle income housing. He has been involved in underwriting very complex financial structures that have included various government subsidies, low income housing tax credits, and bond financing, and has produced innovative financing packages for a variety of MBD’s projects. Mr. Lovett is well known to many non-profit housing organizations and for-profit developers throughout the city. He is a dedicated New Yorker, who cares about his community, and serves on boards of non-profit groups during his spare time. In his early career, Mr. Lovett served in the United States Marine Corps, from 1980 to 1983, and was deployed to Korea and Japan. (Published June 16, 2019)

Larisa is the author of “Improving Tenant Mix: A Guide for Commercial District Practitioners” (International Council of Shopping Centers, 2015) and “Real Estate Redevelopment and Reuse” (International Economic Development Corporation, 2000) and the editor of The Commercial District Advisor blog and e-newsletter distributed quarterly to over 3,500 practitioners around the globe. A Watson Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, Larisa holds a Masters in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). (Published May 16, 2019)
