Old Fashioned Democrat

  • The Little Columbia Professor Who Cried Wolf

29 APR 2024 · In this episode of OLD FASHIONED DEMOCRAT, José brings on Gaijing Girl for another discussion. The recent news about protesters at Columbia getting rounded up and arrested has been bad enough, without the more recent updates that people such as Shai Davadai, a Columbia professor, are actually pushing to have even the National Guard come in and clear out people protesting against Israel's campaign in Gaza. Gaijing and José touch upon the many danger involved in crying out against antisemitism and accusing protesters of wanting to kill Jews or support genocidal terrorists. One great risk is that when a serious backlash arises from Israel's undue influence in the USA government, people may have become so numbed to accusations of antisemitism that they won't take it seriously anymore. • Jory Micah: Christian Zionists Misread Jesus Christ on Purpose

27 MAR 2024 · José Vasco and Jory Micah combine insights to diagnose the problem with Christian Zionists and why they can never seem to get their Bible interpretation on point. As Vasco and Micah detail here, many scriptures point to the reality that Christ ended the centrality of ethnicity in God’s plan for humanity. The idea of a Jewish ethnostate is far afield from anything Jesus Christ preached, never mind an ethnostate involved in the kind of forbidden practices that we have seen in modern Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. Are many Christians merely gullible? Are they fooled by prophetic references that they cannot square properly with Christ’s warning that nobody knows the hour and day of his Second Coming, and therefore there are no grounds to break Christ’s beatitudes and justify this breach by saying we are doing it to prepare Israel for his second coming? There is a lot to process and Micah and Vasco try their best here to help the listeners out. • The Ridiculous Overuse of World War II Narratives in Discussions of Contemporary Events

11 MAR 2024 · In this episode. José invites special guest Gaijingirl, an activist and member of Jewish Voice for Peace, to discuss the ridiculous overuse of World War II narratives in the discussion of contemporary events. The fascination with World War II has long exceeded rational limits, but lately it's gotten insane. If we are going to discuss World War II, let's actually analyze all the complexities in it. In our chat, we discuss a potential “Marshall Plan” for Gaza and Israel. What restructuring and rebuilding would be best to ensure these tragedies don’t happen again? With all this talk of Single vs. Two State, this is a conversation you’ll find fascinating to hear. • Young Dallas Protesters Prove That the Conservative Youth Movement and Zionism are Both Doomed

22 JAN 2024 · Join Jose Vasco on another captivating episode of "Old-Fashioned Democrat" as he explores the transformative dynamics among Dallas youth, aged 13–23, challenging both the conservative youth movement and Zionism. In this thought-provoking discussion, Jose highlights the stark disparity between the seemingly shallow conservatism embodied by figures like Allie Beth Stuckey and the profound analyses of passionate young pro-Palestinian voices, leading him to assert that the die is cast, and the future is owned by the pro-Palestinian left. By amplifying the voices of young activists expressing solidarity with Palestine and Yemen, Jose witnesses a level of precision and drive that surpasses his experiences with young conservatives. In an insightful conversation with pro-Palestinian activist Foxy Jazzabelle, they delve into the rising trend of articulate and empathetic students, questioning the status quo. The episode further explores the historical context of censorship in Black history, drawing connections between Claudine Gay's ouster and nineteenth-century abolitionism, unraveling the power of human narratives and the threats they pose to oppressive systems. "Old-Fashioned Democrat" invites listeners to join the discourse on youth activism, empathy, and the evolving political landscape, providing a nuanced perspective on the future of conservatism, the pro-Palestinian movement, and the significance of free speech.

  • Deciphering Christian Zionism with a Fellow Evangelical Jory Micah

21 DEC 2023 · As Israel’s violent conflict in Gaza dominates the news, the term “Zionism” has become a commonplace in discussion. Most recently, for instance, the United States House of Representatives passed measures by wide margins affirming Zionist principles and denouncing anti-Zionism as antisemitism. In this episode of Old-Fashioned Democrat, I sat down with Jory Micah, a controversial pro-Palestinian podcaster, to question why a huge part of Zionism remains mysterious in the discussion. While much attention has been paid to Jewish Zionism, Jewish Zionists could not by themselves uphold Israel’s position in the Middle East. What group other than Jews is feeding the strength of global Zionism?

  • The Ever Increasing Market Value of Antisemitism

12 DEC 2023 · In this thought-provoking episode of Old Fashioned Democrat, the Jose Vasco challenges the commonly used term "antisemitism" and argues for a more nuanced understanding of prejudice against the Jewish people. Drawing from historical and biblical perspectives, the Vasco contends that the term perpetuates a sense of Jewish exceptionalism, both internally and externally. The concept of Jewish exceptionalism, rooted in religious narratives, is explored, emphasizing its two-sided nature and potential negative consequences. The episode delves into recent political resolutions and discussions, particularly those surrounding Israel, asserting that the term "antisemitism" can be weaponized and misused to stifle criticism and dissent. The Vasco advocates for a universalist approach, emphasizing consistent standards, human rights, and fair equity, while cautioning against the dangers of perpetuating exceptionalism. Overall, the piece encourages a more comprehensive and critical examination of the language and narratives surrounding issues related to the Jewish people and Israel.

  • The Pro-Life Movement Died in Gaza (Long Live the Squad)

30 OCT 2023 · The statistic has been shared broadly: half of Gaza's Palestinians are children. For the vast majority of the world, this should compel a retaliatory army like Israel's to take humanitarian peecautions. Israel's Mossad is the best military intel in the world, so there are plenty of alternatives available to Israel other than amassing a massive civilian death toll including thousands of children. The size of the pro-Palestine rallies around the world and the overwhelming majority of the UN General Assembly voting to call for humanitarianism in Gaza show that most of humanity is pro-life in the most conservative sense, not wanting children to be deprived of life based on adult conflict. In this podcast José Vasco explains his view that the conservative "prolife" movement died in Gaza, because the often mocked lefty "Squad" had the courage to speak up for Palestinian children while the conservatives in the US explicitly encouraged Israel to retalliate without restraint. • On Israel, Feelings Don't Care about Facts

24 OCT 2023 · In this episode, Old-Fashioned Democrat looks at the whirling debates about Israel. Radioactive, heated, and usually irrational, the public conversation about Israel and her endless conflicts with neighbors has been half tragedy and half farce. As José points out, many of the people (on both sides of the political spectrum) who have built careers on being rational and objective lose all common sense when Israel gets mentioned. The premier example is of course Ben Shapiro, whose signature phrase, "facts don't care about your feelings," runs utterly contrary to his terrifying and unhinged rants about Israel. Among Shapiro's greatest hits are the insane notion that no matter how innocent someone is, even a toddler, if Israeli forces took their lives, it was Hamas killing them because Hamas's atrocity was tantamount to forcing Israel to kill Palestinian children. Unmoored from ethics and logic, this sadistic philosophy reflects decades of unchallenged emotionalism from Israel apologists, who typically move from pointing out the barbarity of Palestinian terrorists to engaging in cold-blooded war crimes several orders of magnitude beyond what they suffered. And at the core of the entire hurricane of propaganda lies a recurring and futile attempt to avoid talking about Israel's fundamental problem, which is its status as either an twentieth-century ethnostate based on exclusionary blood heritage or a thirteenth-century theocracy reminiscent of the era of Crusades and caliphates, as if Israel is a modern-day Constantinople or Rhodes. The trademark of good leadership is keeping a cool head even in the midst of trauma, crisis, and grief--yet this is precisely what is lacking in discussion of Israel. This is a ranging podcast worth bookmarking and reflecting on.

José Vasco, born into a hardcore Democratic family, hit a roadblock when the party seemed to abandon its working-class concerns and instead got mired in neoliberal identity politics. José then made a jump to conservative Republicans for over a decade, only to find that their insanity was no walk in the park either. In this podcast, Old-Fashioned Democrat, José will keep searching for the ethos of a Democratic Party committed to harnessing the power of government for the common man.
