    16 MAR 2022 · In this episode, Lillian Pryor, MSN, RN, CNN, the 2020-2021 President of the American Nephrology Nurses Association, talks with Deidra C. Crews, MD, ScM, FASN, MACP, a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. In her conversation with Ms. Pryor, Dr. Crews discusses how nephrology nurses can advance equity in kidney disease outcomes by focusing on social drivers of health inequities. Deidra C. Crews, MD, ScM, FASN, MACP, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and she holds appointments with the School of Nursing; the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research; the Center on Aging and Health; and the Center for Health Equity, where she is Deputy Director. Her research focuses on addressing disparities in the care and outcomes of kidney disease and hypertension through epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. An elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Dr. Crews has received numerous awards for her research contributions, including the 2018 Johns Hopkins University President’s Frontier Award, the 2019 W. Lester Henry Award for Diversity and Access to Care from the American College of Physicians, and the 2019 Distinguished Leader Award from the American Society of Nephrology, where she currently serves as secretary.     30 NOV 2021 · In this episode, Lillian Pryor, MSN, RN, CNN, the 2020-2021 President of the American Nephrology Nurses Association, talks with Mr. Richard Knight, President of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), about his life with chronic kidney disease, how he was first introduced to chronic kidney disease, and how nursing has impacted his experience. He also gives us some perspectives on how, from his point of view, nursing can make a difference in the CKD world. Richard A. Knight is a health care professional and a former patient who received hemodialysis and received a kidney transplant approximately 15 years ago. Mr. Knight is President of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), the oldest and largest independent kidney patient organization in the United States. He is a former member of the NIDDK Advisory Council and serves as the Co-Chair of the Stakeholder Engagement Sub Group for NIDDK’s Strategic Plan. He also is a member of the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients Review Committee and Co-Chair of the SRTR’s Patient and Family Advisory Sub-Committee. Virginia Henry, BS, RN, is a Canadian/American nephrology nurse who is currently serving as ANNA’s first New Emerging Nephrology Nurse Fellowship. She is an acute hemodialysis nurse at Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona. Her passion for serving on the ANNA Board stems from her previous BA in Political Science with a focus in Health Policy at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She is passionate about nephrology nursing and the population she serves, and eventually would love to get her feet back into politics and policy to advocate for and help improve the lives of nephrology patients. Dr. Brown discusses her career journey, some of her experiences leading up to her nursing career, how she was introduced to nephrology nursing, her involvement with the American Nephrology Nurses Association, her mantra for her own personal goals, and the importance of “Owning Your Practice.” Loretta Jackson Brown, PhD, RN, CNN, began her nursing career as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Brown is the Senior Health Communication Specialist and Team Lead, Education, Campaigns, and Implementation, for the National Center of Injury Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Brown is a leader within the American Nephrology Nurses Association, having served as a Southeast Vice President on the ANNA Board of Directors, chaired the ANNA Leadership Development Committee, and an author for ANNA publications and the Nephrology Nursing Journal. Dr. Brown holds national certification as a certified nephrology nurse. Dr. Brown is an active member of the American Nephrology Nurses Association and other national organizations. She is the Leader of ANNA’s Educator Specialty Practice Network, serves on ANNA’s Leadership and Research Committee, and is a member of the Manuscript Review Panel for the Nephrology Nursing Journal. Amber B. Paulus, PhD, RN, CPHQ, is a Registered Nurse and Health Services Researcher whose research endeavors focus on evaluating the quality of health care delivery, health care outcomes, and quality improvement initiatives among individuals with kidney disease and providers of transplant and dialysis services. She currently serves as the Director of Data Science at Quality Insights, driving the organizational strategy for data initiatives. Through her role at Quality Insights, she also leads research projects focused on evaluating the 5-Diamond Patient Safety program concerning several components of patient safety among dialysis providers, including emergency management, identifying barriers to home dialysis and kidney transplantation utilization, and the screening and management of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Dr. Paulus serves as the chapter president of the Old Dominion chapter of the American Nephrology Nursing Association, chair designee of the ANNA Research Committee, and is a member of the ANNA Leadership Committee. Villaran, MS, MSN, CNN, CCRN (Alumnus), discusses with Lillian Pryor, MSN, RN, CNN, why it is important for nurses to become advocates for their profession and patients. She encourages nurses to use their collective voice to influence and advocate for policy and health care legislation at the local, state, and federal levels. She advises nurses to “Develop your story, and make sure legislators know your name and that you are a nurse.” Teresa R. Villaran, MS, MSN, CNN, CNE, CCRN (Alumnus), is a staff nurse with Fresenius Kidney Care. She is the President of the ANNA Bluegrass Chapter, a member of the ANNA Health Policy Committee, and serves on the Manuscript Review Panel for the Nephrology Nursing Journal. She is the current Chair of the Kentucky Nurses Association Professional Nursing Practice and Advocacy Cabinet and serves on the 2019-2021 Kentucky Nurses Association Board of Directors. She is a Board Member of the St. John’s College of Nursing Alumni Association. She has served as an advocate the past two years at the National Kidney Foundation Patient Summit. She is currently a member of the National Kidney Foundation State Chronic Kidney Disease task force/ Living Donor Protection Act coalition. She has been active this year in delivering mass COCVID-19 vaccinations for the Louisville Health Department. She attended the American Nurses Association 2021 Hill Day and The Nurse in Washington Internship as a grant through ANNA. She currently sits on the Kentucky Nurses Association task force charged with creating a Legislative and Leadership Academy to increase nurses’ confidence and competence to exert their influence through policy.
