Kevin's AFCON Podcast

  • QF Day 2

30 JAN 2022 · We are down to business. Four teams to go and four matches of this tournament left. The Indomitable Lions ; The Pharoes ; The Lions of Teranga and The Stallions. HUGE SHOUOUT to Spreaker for hosting these podcasts.

  • QF Day 1

29 JAN 2022 · Not only was there a COUP in Burkina Faso last week, in as much as even mentioning it on this podcast ; but so have the fitba team, who might well run away the coup...cup. Burkina Faso are brilliant footballers and knock out Tunisia. And, a bridge too far! Gambia, we thank you, and as a huge fan of the under dog, you've told our story well at AFCON!

  • Last 16 ; Day 4

26 JAN 2022 · The final two games of the last sixteen were played today. Now on to a 2 day break before the Quarter Finals. Two penalty shoot outs needed. No goals in regular time today, and whilst Ivory Coast and Egypt played out the best 0-0 I've seen in a long time ; Equatorial Guinea managed to hold Mali. A little disjointed, but I get there in the end after a bit of handball and weather chat too. See you in a few days.

  • Last 16 ; Day 3

25 JAN 2022 · Just as this tournament was about to return to form of 1-0s and the mostly fancied team to win, Malawi turn up and give every single person who just loves, gets high even (man, it certainly feels it) belief and dreams. Even if its only for 70 mins, what is it with the underdog and well, just loving cheering them on. End up explaining for what I think is the third time on this podcast, the format of the Confederations Cup, Yikes!

  • Last 16 ; Day 2

24 JAN 2022 · Chaker Alhadhur. Youssouf M'Changama. Comores. Musa Barrow. Gambia. I think that is all we need to say today!

  • Last 16; Day 1

23 JAN 2022 · We're back and in knockout form. AFCON has returned to form as well : long penalty competitions ; madcap goalkeeping and of course Nigeria flattering to device once again at this tournament. A ram shackled look over today's Nigeria-Algeria and Gabon-Burkina Faso matches plus a scan over the World Cup qualifying and AFCON pre-qualifying ties. This intended to be short and sweet. Not blaming having a 'busy weekend', but I have to! Ran in to this one without really thinking about what I was going to say, this may well be the worst one!

  • Day 12

20 JAN 2022 · We are at the half-way point, folks. As Sigur Rós sang 'þetta er ágætis byrjun' ''an alright start," it certainly had been up to having sat through about 14 mostly mundane, exhausting looking players and befuddled referees blowing five minutes early, battle out 1-0 matches quite the dull start to AFCON (Even the keepers were improving and not bringing a smile or two!) but THEN : Day 8 and that shock Equatorial Guinea win over the Desert Foxes followed up by an even bigger shock Comoros had beaten Ghana (albeit with ten men). Still...(and that number again - three) a third shock, not only did Algeria lose their winning record ; they are heading home out of the group! Apologies, this will go long - how can you talk about all that and keep it under 30 minutes tonight? Now for a welcomed break for all four listeners, myself and Africa. See you in three days!

  • Day 11

19 JAN 2022 · Recorded (back on the phone, need to try and figure out the mic volume levels. Someone get CJ Marr on a flight over, please!) COMOROS, aye, it deserves caps for that, with a huge win over Ghana - who are definitely heading home. Gabonese fans make one hell of a racket and turn Cameroon in to Gabon for a night and I get 'prank'/scam called from a Cypriot number. An episode with no cohesion or flow, but I got there. Last day of the group stage tomorrow! AND WHERE IS THE FLYING HAGGIS?

    Day 10

18 JAN 2022 · Recorded right after the final two games of Groups B, so next to nothing about Group C, that will be tomorrow. HUGE shoutout to Zimbabwe, and quite right for them to get on the bevie after recording a fine win. Guinea, Senegal and Malawi (pretty much) all go march in to the last sixteen whilst the Warriors go home with pride! Salima Makansanga, the first female ref ever at AFCON, so a mini shoutout to her and the nation of Rwanda! First on mic, worst on quality.

  • Day 9

17 JAN 2022 · A more subdued and relaxed manner today at Day 9 of the African Cup of Nations. Four teams ; two goals and one point for each side. We say goodbye to Ethiopia ; a possible new segment or not going by the way I tried to explain it in WHGYM, and what do we do tonight, there's no other games!

Welcome along to my official AFCON, your unofficial AFCON, I watch so you don't have to ; but you really should, AFCON Podcast.

What started on a broken phone and as a joke, has turned in to a daily ramble about African Cup of Nations 2021.

SHOUT OUT to anyone who has followed over from SC to here (I'm still a tight-fisted wee fud, so thanks for the free uploads SC and here's to you, Spreaker and your free 5 hours of uploads).

For what I lack in any skill, professionalism, I hope to equal that out with a genuine love and enthusiasm for one of the greatest football tournaments in international football.

I'll try to cover the games, incidents and the news of the day at the Championship along with rambling nonsense too.
