The Independence Plaza neighborhood, part of Historic Northeast, exudes history and charm. Originally developed in 1876, it defied critics and thrived. Once home to industrial tycoons, it transitioned to a diverse, middle-class community, featuring Victorian and modern homes. Residents are engaged with the Independence Plaza Neighborhood Council, enjoying amenities like three city parks. Its proximity to downtown offers access to culture and entertainment. The council drives initiatives for art, sustainable development, and more.   • 333: A conversation with the Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association

    20 APR 2024 · This week, on the Northeast Newscast, we sit down with President and Security Lead Jon Cokely and Green Spaces Steward Whitney Barnardo from the Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association. Pendleton Heights, one of Kansas City's oldest communities, dates back to the late 1880s. Initially settled by affluent families seeking respite from city life, it's now a vibrant neighborhood with rich history and Victorian-era homes. Designated a National Register Historic District, it's recognized for its preservation efforts and was even named one of the Best Old House Neighborhoods in the U.S. by This Old House magazine in 2013. Bound by The Paseo, Cliff Drive, Chestnut Trafficway, and Independence Boulevard, Pendleton Heights features Kansas City's first boulevard, three city parks, and a scenic byway. It's also home to a community garden, orchards, and a pocket park maintained by residents. Recent developments include new homes with property tax abatements and trendy coffee shops. The forthcoming Reservoir promises to be a unique food and entertainment venue. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy championship-level disc golf courses amid the picturesque Kessler Park. The neighborhood's active community organization fosters diversity and is fostering an arts enclave. Today, it thrives as an arts hub, featuring galleries and a monthly art walk. Notable eateries like Happy Gillis and Garozzo's Italian Restaurant draw visitors, while the Sewing Labs offer job training.  This podcast kicks off our community engagement neighborhood series.
