Released as their debut single in the summer of 1978, the song became an extremely popular "crossover" disco song. It topped the American pop, soul and disco charts, and it became the first certified platinum single in the history of Capitol Records for selling over two million copies. Michael McDonald sang lead with the Doobie Brothers for the 1978 album Minute by Minute.  So what's new? Michael has announced a new book titled What A Fool Believes: A Memoir. It will be out May 21, 2024 via Dey Street Books. The book is about Michael's career. The book is written with his friend Paul Reiser. Hello! I'm Gail Nobles. Welcome to the hit makers podcast. I want to talk about a girl group from Oakland California which achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s. They are the Pointer Sisters. There were four sisters: June Pointer, Bonnie Pointer, Anita Pointer, and Ruth Pointer. Bonnie left the group and went solo. You may remember her hit Heaven Must Have Sent You which became a US top 20 pop hit on September 1, 1979. The girl group genres are plentiful: R&B, pop jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country, and rock. The Pointer Sisters have won three Grammy Awards and receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. The group had 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985. The first time I heard the Pointer Sisters is when I heard their hit song Fire in 1979. Then after that, He's So Shy in 1980. The song had an outstanding keyboard and synthesizer sound. It was very noticeable to me and different than most of the songs I heard during that time. Whenever I saw the Pointer Sisters, their song He's So Shy was the first song that would come to my mind. The single charted at UK number 12, US pop number 53, US R&B number 33, and US disco number 24 by the Scottish punk and R&B group Average White Band. The song Let’s Go Round Again was written by Alan Gorrie and produces Average White Band and David Foster. The Average White Band (also known as AWB) are a Scottish funk and R&B band that had a series of soul and disco hits between 1974 and 1980. They are best known for their million-selling instrumental track "Pick Up the Pieces", and their albums AWB and "Cut the Cake". Whitney Houston's album was released in 1985. It topped the Billboard 200 for 14 weeks in 1986. On that album, "The Greatest Love of All" is the first song to hit my mind when I think of Whitney, but not the only song. The song was composed by Michael Masser and Linda Creed wrote the lyrics. To me, it's a very special and spiritual song. Whitney Houston is called the First Lady of song, and she is also called the voice.........

Today we're going to talk about Michael Jackson. The disco Michael Jackson and the disco years. Michael Jackson was a hitmaker. He made the hits from the time he was a child with his brothers to the time on up to a grown man. I love the disco Michael. That's when everybody went dancing. When he was singing "Rock With You", everybody was singing and dancing to that song. I'll never forget the fun I had in a school dance with my classmates in my elementary years. We danced to that song. The school loved us. Those were the days when Michael Jacksons seemed a little more outgoing hanging out with Diana Ross. I remember seeing late night on TV Michael Jackson performing "Rock With You" with Diana Ross. Those were the good old days. Songs like "Rock With You" and "Off The Wall" always takes me back to the era of Disco. They were his most popular songs back then. I t was the 1970's when Michael Jackson began his solo career. Later, he became The King of Pop. It wasn't until after I bought Michael's Thriller album that I was able to buy his album Off The Wall. I always had his single Rock With You in my parents 45 record collection. I was only eight years old in those days, and albums in 1979 probably were about.....I don't know. $8, $9, or $10. Could have been less. Could have been more. I don't remember. If you bought Off The Wall and the Thriller album, they were albums worth buying.
