FTSQ: Celebrating non-conformists

  • #5 Even non-conformists need to belong – Minter Dial (Futurist, Author, Intl. Speaker)

13 DEC 2019 · This is the fifth episode of our ‘Celebrating non-conformist’s series’. It unpacks and celebrates the thinking, philosophy, experiences and lives of as many non-conformists as Lena Robinson, founder/fixer of FTSQ, can find to interview. Minter Dial takes us on an eclectic life journey. Born to American parents in Belgium, educated in England, not speaking until he was three, being kicked out of his first school at the age of five, being the non-conformist at Eaton, but being ‘inspired’ by the Deadhead in the ‘orange room’. It’s a winding story of contextual non-conformity that weaves its way through Etonian larks, 15 country and 34 home moves, World War II veterans, dope smoking long-haired students, watching the second plane fly into the Twin Towers on 9/11, writing books and 200+ Grateful Dead concerts. This is a doozie of a story.

  • #4 London to Nigeria and back again, a British Black African illustrator’s journey with Dap Adeola (DAPS).

30 SEP 2019 · Dap Adeola (DAPS) takes us on a blunt, honest journey through his life as a British Black African. From an early age he was destined to live his life, on his terms. Having left his parents behind in Nigeria at the age of four, he lived with his Aunt, in South London until 2011. Still considered the ‘black sheep’ of the family his non-conformity shows up throughout his life, and sees it as a strength he brings to his art, cartoons and more recently in his award winning children’s book illustrations. It’s an inspiring, entertaining honest story. Well worth a listen.

  • #3 I refuse your label of non-conformist – Katy Howell (immediate futures)

31 JUL 2019 · This is the third episode of our ‘Celebrating non-conformist’s series’. The series intends to unpack and celebrate the thinking, philosophy, experiences and lives of as many non-conformists as Lena Robinson, founder/fixer of FTSQ, can find to interview. Katie Howell takes us on a comical life journey. Born in the 60’s to courageous immigrants. Being a kid in the racist 70’s. Growing Judicious balls at university in the 80’s. Not fitting into a world of white male advertising in the 90’s and finally achieving influencer status on radio and tv as an accidental agency owner of ‘immediate futures’ in the naughties. It’s a witty story of exclusion and self-acceptance, with a whole lot of bravery and fighting spirit chucked in.

Chris Davis, a blind, transgender fashion designer, inspired by the likes of David Bowie, Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren and Balenciaga, talks us through an inspiring life story. The story begins with Chris as a small boy ‘dressing up’ at his Grandmother’s, being given a hard time at school, living in a rich and vibrant Camden at the height of the punk era, losing his sight and finally transitioning from panel-beater to fashion designer of alternative, bespoke clothing. It’s a fascinating journey and perfectly timed to celebrate non-conformity and diversity during pride month.
