Inizia a fare foto per necessità: sentiva l’esigenza di raccontare le tante storie che visualizzava nella sua mente. Si fa prestare una macchina fotografica da un amico e il resto è storia. Nei suoi scatti, dove si mescolano sogno e politica in chiave afrofuturista, Obasi riflette su sessualità, mascolinità tossica e stereotipi culturali, specialmente quelli legati al suo Paese, la Nigeria. La sua è una creatività che non conosce barriere: accanto alla carriera da fotografo, infatti, porta avanti con successo anche quella di stylist (ha lavorato, tra gli altri, con Beyoncé e Travis Scott). Per il Calendario Lavazza 2024 le immagini di Obasi raccontano i valori di accoglienza e sostegno che guidano il lavoro della Panzi Foundation, creata da Denis Mukwege, Premio Nobel per la Pace 2018.

18 OCT 2023 · Movies, books and graphic design are central to the artistic development of Daniel Obasi. He started taking pictures out of necessity: he felt the need to tell the many stories in his head. He borrowed his first camera from a friend and the rest is history. His pictures combine dream and politics in an afro-futurist key; Obasi reflects on sexuality, toxic masculinity and cultural stereotypes, in particular those of his native Nigeria. His creativity knows no bounds: as well as a photographer, he’s also a successful stylist (who’s worked with Beyoncé and Travis Scott among others). For the Lavazza 2024 Calendar, Obasi’s pictures depict the values of hospitality and support which are followed by the Panzi Foundation, created by Denis Mukwege, winner of the Nobel Peace prize in 2018.
