BackMatter: Rabbit Holes

  • I Wish I Hadn’t Cried So Much!

11 MAY 2022 · We made it to the finish line, and it turns out that making a full multimedia publication is hard! Looking back at this semester, we consider what went well, what could have gone better, and what lessons we learned along the way—and why we almost didn’t make it to print! Co-hosts Katherine Peach and Tobias Lentz speak in the studio (for the first time!) with BackMatter Managing Editor Michaela Keil about the burden of true genius—and why anyone in this role needs to be prepared to do it all. We also hear from Jon Baskin, founding editor of The Point and Associate Director of Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism at the New School, and many more. This is a podcast about the making of the publication BackMatter, an annual print magazine created by graduate students at The New School, ourselves included, in the city of New York. • I Was Just Giving Myself Some Good Advice . . .

10 MAY 2022 · What should you know before entering the publishing world? In this episode, we are focusing on a quote from Alice in Wonderland, not necessarily from the book by Lewis Carroll, but from the 1951 Disney movie: “I was just giving myself some good advice.” And we received a lot of great advice that we are sharing with you, including from the impeccable Kayla Romberger, who has worked in the independent publishing world for many years and runs an art bookstore—dedicated mostly to selling independently published books or short-run publications on art, design, and theory. And then we'll also hear from Rachel Rosenfelt, Founding Editor of The New Inquiry, last year's BackMatter Editor in Chief Miko Yoshida, and Jon Baskin, who started a magazine called The Point and is our fearless leader this semester alongside Kayla. • Six Impossible Things

10 MAY 2022 · Ever wonder what it takes to produce a magazine? And all those titles on a masthead, how does an EIC operate compared to a Creative Director, anyway? This episode co-hosts Katherine Peach and Tobias Lentz speak with each of BackMatter Magazine's six teams to explore roles, collaboration, and learning lessons as we attempt to pull off an impossible task: produce a magazine, website, and podcast from scratch — in just four months. This episode's title is borrowed from the Alice in Wonderland quote: "Why sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." This is a podcast about the making of the publication BackMatter, an annual print magazine created by graduate students at The New School, ourselves included, in the city of New York. • What Is the Use of a Podcast?

19 APR 2022 · Why create a podcast for a magazine? This week Katherine and Tobias talk about the choices they have to make when producing a podcast (do we even know how we want our podcast to go?). First, they talk to the founder of The New Inquiry, and the program that hosts BackMatter magazine, Rachel Rosenfelt, who answers the question: Is it possible to create a publication through the power of collective belief? Plus, BackMatter EIC Madeline Janz shares how she stepped into the role of "big boss" of a team producing a new publication in just four months. Interested in starting your own podcast? Tune in! What is the point of a publication if it doesn’t spark a bit of conversation? We couldn’t help but take Lewis Carroll’s advice by getting curiouser and curiouser about what it means to build a literary community from scratch. Join us down the rabbit hole as co-hosts Katherine Peach and Tobias Lentz explore how to ideate and produce a multimedia publication, along with their fellow graduate students at the New School, as they produce (in real-time) the annual issue of BackMatter Magazine, in the city of New York.
