30 JUL 2023 · Professor Richard Rex of Queens' College, Cambridge, discusses 'Europe and the Faith'. He describes how Christianity has helped to shape Europe down to the present day and what will happen to Europe as the faith fades from the continent. The talk was hosted by The Iona Institute and the Notre Dame Newman Centre for Faith and Reason. It took place in University Church in Dublin on March 22, 2023. The title deliberately evokes Hilaire Belloc's book of the same name.

8 JUL 2023 · Dr Gerard Casey, former head of the Department of Philosophy at UCD recently addressed a meeting organised by The Iona Institute called ‘Christians in a post-human world: a sneak look at our near future’. Dr Casey described how our world is changing even more rapidly than we realise. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) develops, there is growing talk of a ‘trans-human’ or even ‘post-human’ future, in which humans, merged with technology, will transcend their own physical and intellectual limits and even achieve a kind of immortality. Some thinkers welcome this and look forward to a time when humans will be ‘post-human’. They believe humans have had a destructive impact on the planet overall and evolution has given us a nature that is too violent and competitive. But what are Christians to make of all this? Should we embrace post-humanism or reject it as an attack on how we are created by God? In his talk, Dr Casey discussed these vital questions. The talk was delivered in the Central Catholic Library, Dublin, on June 27th, 2023.

10 JAN 2022 · Due mainly to Covid-19, Ireland saw a significant drop in the number of births in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period last year. At 14.6pc, it was the second biggest fall in Europe, and would have been even worse were it not for the number of non-Irish nationals having babies here. Marriages also went significantly down. We are experiencing a demographic catastrophe. 20 OCT 2020 · Laws allowing the direct (euthanasia) or indirect (assisted suicide) killing of a patient by doctors are rare in the world. They only exist in six countries, in one Australian state and in nine US states. Nonetheless, in all those places we see a common pattern: legislation is initially introduced on certain limited grounds and with time those grounds continuously expand. Moreover, once a “right to die” is established, courts will find limitations discriminatory and will remove them.

5 OCT 2020 · The Vatican has published a new document decrying euthanasia. It is very timely as an assisted suicide bill currently before the Dáil. The document describes euthanasia as “an intrinsically evil act, in every situation or circumstance”, as it directly causes the death of an innocent human being. It says assisted suicide makes the act of suicide even worse by involving another person in it, namely the health workers and anyone else involved in the decision
