Recent statistics tell us that over 23% of adults in the U.S.—that's around 59 million people—are experiencing some form of mental illness each year. And guess what? The crisis is hitting our young adults the hardest, with nearly 36% of those aged 18 to 25 reporting mental health struggles.
It’s alarming that while these numbers are rising, more than half of those individuals—55%—aren’t receiving the treatment they need. So, what’s holding them back? There’s a lot at play here, from stigma to access issues, and even financial barriers like medical debt, which can keep people from seeking help. Imagine being a child, eager to learn, but your home life is in chaos. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a harsh reality for about 1.37 million students in the 2022-23 school year alone. That’s a staggering 25% increase in just two years!
Let’s talk about where these students are coming from. In California, for instance, nearly 20,000 additional students were reported homeless during the latest school year. And take New York City, which has reached a record high—over 154,000 students, or nearly one in seven, are living without stable housing.
