  • "It's a Refreshing Thing"

11 JUN 2023 · Acts 3:17-2 (NRSVUE)17 “And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+3%3A+17-21&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-27004a] would suffer. 19 Repent, therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, 20 so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Messiah[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+3%3A+17-21&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-27006b] appointed for you, that is, Jesus, 21 who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets.

  • "Living Out Our Faith in the Presence of Others"

7 JUN 2023 · Galatians 2:11-14 (NRSVUE)Paul Rebukes Peter at Antioch11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood self-condemned, 12 for until certain people came from James, he used to eat with the gentiles. But after they came, he drew back and kept himself separate for fear of the circumcision faction. 13 And the other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the gentiles to live like Jews?”[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A+11-14&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-29079a]

28 MAY 2023 · Acts 2: 1-412 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26954a] as the Spirit enabled them.5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26959b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”Peter Addresses the Crowd14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:17 “‘In the last days, God says,     I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,     your young men will see visions,     your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,     I will pour out my Spirit in those days,     and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above     and signs on the earth below,     blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness     and the moon to blood     before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls     on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26971c]22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26973d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:“‘I saw the Lord always before me.     Because he is at my right hand,     I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;     my body also will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,     you will not let your holy one see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life;     you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26978e]29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,“‘The Lord said to my Lord:     “Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies     a footstool for your feet.”’[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%202&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26985f]36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

  • "But I Did Nothing Wrong!"

30 APR 2023 · 1 Peter 2:19-25 (NRSVUE)19 For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly. 20 If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this is a commendable thing before God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.22 “He committed no sin,     and no deceit was found in his mouth.”23 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%202%3A19-25&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-30406a] so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%202%3A19-25&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-30406b] you have been healed. 25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%202%3A19-25&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-30407c]

  • "Peace, Two Times"

16 APR 2023 · John 20:19-23 (NRSVUE)Jesus Appears to the Disciples19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

  • "I Love to Tell the Story"

9 APR 2023 · Acts 10:34-43 (NRSVUE)Gentiles Hear the Good News34 Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every people anyone who fears him and practices righteousness[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%2010%3A34-43&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-27283a] is acceptable to him. 36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37 That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

  • "A Little Humility Never Hurts"

2 APR 2023 · Philippians 2:5-11 (NRSVUE)5 Let the same mind be in you that was[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians%202%3A5-11&version=NRSVUE#fen-NRSVUE-29380a] in Christ Jesus,6 who, though he existed in the form of God,     did not regard equality with God     as something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself,     taking the form of a slave,     assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, 8     he humbled himself     and became obedient to the point of death—     even death on a cross.9 Therefore God exalted him even more highly     and gave him the name     that is above every other name, 10 so that at the name given to Jesus     every knee should bend,     in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess     that Jesus Christ is Lord,     to the glory of God the Father.
