Why are people so weary and heavy laden? What causes us to be depressed, anxious, and unhappy? Psychology can be simplistic and reductionistic in treating the soul: just change your behavior and your feelings will change; just change your thoughts and your feelings will change; get counseling, examine your past, dreams, etc. Christians can also be too simplistic when dealing with weary souls: you just need to repent or just believe more, pray more. God shows us in Psalm 88 that the human soul is complex and that there are a number of things that can damage our souls. Therefore, we need to make care for our souls a priority and trust the God who created our souls to heal them.
