Victor Jara titled his final composition after the location where he resided during his last moments: Estadio Chile, an enclosed sports facility in Santiago. This piece was penned on the 16th of September 1973, merely five days following a military coup orchestrated by General Augusto Pinochet, which resulted in the overthrow of Chile's socialist administration led by President Salvador Allende. Jara was apprehended the day after the coup and confined within the stadium, which had transformed into an improvised holding center for approximately 5,000 advocates of Allende's Popular Unity coalition.

Numerous conflicting accounts exist regarding Jara's final days, however, the 2019 Netflix documentary Massacre at the Stadium skillfully reconstructs a compelling narrative. Jara, a renowned musician and ardent supporter of Allende, was immediately identified upon entering the stadium.
