The Maguindanao Massacre is one of the most atrocious examples of political rivalry gone wrong. The ruling Ampatuan clan had gone unchallenged for so long in Maguindanao. Their political clout, power, wealth and private militia made sure that every local election would end in their favour. But in 2009 their unopposed hold over Maguindanao would be challenged by one person from their rival clan. When Esmail Mangudadatu decided to challenge an Ampatuan for the Maguindanao gubernatorial post, it set off a chain of events that cost the lives of not only other Mangudadatu relatives but also lawyers and journalists, making this also one of the most hostile crimes committed against members of the press in the Philippines to date.
