Welcome to the weekend edition of RiversZen Today for Saturday and Sunday, January 19th and 20th, 2019

News of the day: It’s Saturday. Get out of bed a little early. The weather is a tad better than yesterday . . . winds are forecast to be greatly diminished; no rain forecast for the early part of our day. At 8:00 in Ilwaco is Dave with Yoga Energy Flow. A great combination of tai-chi, qigong, traditional yoga and resistance stretching all blended together in a flow that will leave you energized and ready to take on the weekend. And probably ready to take on Kim’s Yogalates class right after it.

And speaking of Kim. Maybe you have noticed those piles of little blue weights in the props closets in Ilwaco and Astoria? Have you been in a class using those weights yet? They are just tiny little weights. They only weigh 2 pounds . . . light as a feather, right? If you were fortunate enough to attend Kim’s Yogalates classes this week you know first hand how truly light they are and how little it took to get your arms burning. There are several benefits to lifting smaller weights. Obviously less opportunity for injury compared to heavy weights since there is less likelihood you will hurt yourself by dropping one on your foot; but you are better able to maintain your form with lighter weights minimizing the risk of injury from lifting weights which are too heavy or from incorrect form. Lighter weights allow you to perform more reps for each exercise which will improve strength, power and your muscular endurance. That’s a lot of benefit from just a 2 pound mini-dumbbell. But, wait, there’s more. Kim also has new resistance bands. Wow . . . say it isn’t so? We will leave those for a post on another day. If it’s coming from Kim you know its going to be fun! You can play with the new mini-weights with Kim in Yogalates in Ilwaco at 9:00 am this morning and at 10:45 am in Astoria. Join in the fun! Your body will thank you . . . strength, power, muscular endurance and laughter . . . what a great combo.

After Dave’s flow and Kim’s Yogalates, consider finishing the morning off in Ilwaco with Dave’s second class at 10:00 am. It’s the perfect balance of effort and stretch . . . Smooth and Easy Stretch to be exact.

In Astoria, Peter’s class starts the day at 9:30 . . . beginning floor pilates. Peter will have you leaving your worries and woes behind you at the door and before you know it your body will be put through the paces. Pilates is exercise with repetition; but, it’s not the quantity but the quality of the repetitions that are important as you improve your tone, posture and flexibility. With his background in martial arts, dance and personal training, he will bring a myriad of perspectives to your practice. Close your eyes and listen to his voice. His tone is relaxing, strong, meditative, strengthening. You might even recognize it from the radio.

Consider taking the next class on the schedule with Kim for a great double up.
