Welcome to This Edition of RiversZen Today for Monday, January 7th, 2019

The news of the day: Most everyone is back from their various holiday commitments. Things should get back to normal this week, so I would like to start concentrating on the basics again. It is easy for us to lose focus when we are so busy. When we come to class, we don’t always take that experience with us to fine tuning our motions off the mat. Sometimes we go through what we think the motions are supposed to be without really thinking. When we are going through our day, we are just doing that . . . going through our day. Our mind is elsewhere thinking about work, the kids, money, what to fix for dinner . . . thinking about life and what we need to do. We don’t think about the impact of the way we walk or sit or sleep or just stand.

I have a request for today. Please take a few moments from time to time throughout your day to check in with your body. Are you sitting or standing tall? What is the position your feet? Turned in or out? Are you leaning forward? When you walk are you taking normal strides or shuffling your feet? Are your shoulders rounded forward? Take note of your observations and we can begin the work of fine tuning your posture.

One fact to share . . . our head weighs about 8 to 10 pounds and seems weightless when it is properly balanced. However, with a head forward posture so prevalent today, we find that the weight doubles for every inch forward of that neutral position. Think of the impact of that on your neck, shoulders and spine. Just some food for thought.
