Welcome to This Edition of RiversZen Today for Friday, January 25th, 2019

The news of the day: Yesterday we talked about maintaining life skills and checking in from time to time to make sure you are still capable of performing them. Did you spend any time since then checking out any basic moves? What did you try? Getting up and down to/from the floor? Balancing on one leg? Can you scratch your own back . . . are you able to clasp your hands together in the center of your back? Can you touch your toes? Can you do a squat? Can you stand on your tip toes and reach your arms over head? Each of those moves are key to maintaining your own sense of freedom as you age. The ability to get up and down from the floor may be obvious; but what about the others? As a very small child I remember a man who was a customer of my grandmother’s road side vegetable stand. This gentleman was so compromised he could not reach forward from a seated position in his car to put the key in the ignition and start his car. So he never removed the key from the ignition. To start the car, he created a long wooden tool with a notch cut out of it to facilitate starting the car. We don’t even think much about that basic move to just reach forward, but, it is key to our sense of freedom. Balancing on one leg makes it possible for us to put our pants on in the middle of the room without falling down. Scratching your own back or connecting your hands behind your back ensures you can take care of your own needs if you have a scratch or need to facilitate some issue that happens behind you . . . like reaching in the back of the car from the front seat. . . it happens. Touching your toes and squatting ensure your ability to pick things up from the floor; but, there is also the more subtle concept of putting on your own socks from either a standing or seated position. Think about all the things you do each day and then realizing you couldn’t do even one of them. If any of those things start happening to you don’t fret you can get them back. Many of those moves where a challenge for us in our 40’s and 50’s but not any longer. And you can work toward fixing any of the difficulties you may be experiencing today.
