El Gran Campeon Mexicano defended wayward son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after a Friday night fiasco in Phoenix, but we all wished we could have heard their private conversation after Junior quit on his stool, complaining about a broken nose, after 5 rounds with Daniel Jacobs.

Mexican fans hurled debris and beer at the son of their all-time greatest ring legend after an embarrassing ending to a messy promotion that was (1) moved from Nevada to Arizona after Junior dodged a drug test in Las Vegas, (2) boosted from 168 to 175 pounds after Chavez Jr. showed up 5 pounds heavy -- an unprofessional lapse for which he was fined $1 million -- (3) truncated when Chavez Jr. declined to continue due to a sore nose and a bloody eyebrow, and (4) stained one more time when the fighter and his father bogusly blamed Jacobs for causing those injuries with dirty tactics. Had enough, yet, of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, boxing fans?

Fortunately, the sport rose from that ugly knockdown to give us a scintillating Saturday-night rematch between Jermall Charlo and Tony Harrison, who fought an inspired war before Charlo reclaimed his WBC super welterweight crown with two knockdowns and an 11th-round TKO.

Expert analysts Travis Hartman, Rizwaan Zahid, and John J. Raspanti stage a lively sparring session over those two main events, and also argue about Errol Spence's return to the public eye with a Friday-night interview on ESPN. Spence says he's back in training with a plan to fight again in May, but is he as healthy as he claims, or downplaying the effects of that horrific 100-mph car wreck that sent him to the hospital in October?

And we close the show with an interview with Brian "BoMac" McIntyre, head trainer of undefeated three-division world champion Terence Crawford, who moved to 36-0 on Dec. 14 with a ninth-round TKO of previously unbeaten Egidijus Kavaliauskas at Madison Square Garden.

Happy holidays, Ringside Nation.
